Lan Mi and senior
Fatima El Ashram recorded victories in their respective singles matches as Delaware defeated Cornell, 5-2, at the Reis Tennis Center on Saturday.
Mi recorded a three-set victory in the No. 1 singles match over Delaware's Adel-Byanu Abidullina, 7-6 (6), 1-6, 6-1. El Ashram registered a straight-set victory at No. 5 singles, defeating Maryia Hrynashka, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Delaware opened the match earning the doubles point thanks to 6-4 and 6-2 victories. The No. 1 singles match featuring Cornell junior
Lauren Stein and freshman
Emma Baker did not finish, despite the Big Red duo holding a 5-4 lead.
Sophomore
Alexandra Savu and freshman
Tanya Fan lost their respective singles matches in three sets.
Savu won the opening set in a tiebreaker that finished with a 10-8 score. Delaware's Toni Nelson was victorious in the other two sets at No. 4 singles over Savu, 6-1, 6-4.
After losing 6-4 in the opening set to the Blue Hens' Julieta Honrubia, Fan recorded a 6-2 victory to force a decisive third set. Honrubia solidified the victory in the No. 6 singles match with a 6-2 win in the final set.
Looking Ahead
Cornell will continue its homestand at the Reis Tennis Center next weekend when it welcomes Indiana and Niagara to East Hill. The match against the Hoosiers on Friday, Feb. 3, is scheduled for 3 p.m. before returning on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. against the Purple Eagles.
