Field Hockey Preps For Midweek Tilt With Colgate

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell field hockey team will look to claim another win against a Patriot League foe when Central New York rival Colgate visits Marsha Dodson Field on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The Big Red has won five consecutive games against Patriot League opponents entering the midweek matchup. The contest will serve as the team's Mental Health Awareness game as part of the Huddle Together for Mental Health Week of programming.

STORYLINES
• Cornell has won five of its past six contests with the lone defeat coming to preseason top 10 eam Princeton on the road in a double overtime shootout.
• Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey established a new Cornell scoring record after posting a goal and two assists in Sunday's 4-2 victory over Lehigh, ending the afternoon with 101 points to surpass Krysten Mayers '18, who graduated with 99 points.
• Cornell held a 21-4 edge in shots against the Mountain Hawks, who toppled Colgate 3-1 on Saturday.
• The Raiders are 3-6 entering the contest under head coach April Cornell-DeAngelis.
• Ella Murphy leads the team in goals (three), assists (five) and points (11), while Claire van Kempen has played every minute in goal and sports a 2.50 goals against average and a .667 save percentage.
• Cornell has won six consecutive meetings between the teams, including a 3-1 triumph over the Raiders last September in Ithaca.

• Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey is one of a kind, and after Sunday's 4-2 win over defending Patriot League champion Lehigh (8-3) at Marsha Dodson Field, she truly stands alone.
• Ramsey was credited with the go-ahead goal and assisted on two other scores to become Cornell's all-time leading point scorer while simultaneously becoming the first Big Red player to reach the 100-point milestone.
• Already the school's career goals leader (45), she ended the day with 101 points to pass Krysten Mayers '18, who previously held the record with 99 points.
• Despite her effort, 20th-ranked Cornell (6-3) wasn't a one-person show on Sunday, controlling the action with a 21-4 edge in shots and an 8-3 edge in penalty corners.

FOUR NAMED TO NFHCA WATCHLIST
• Four members of the Cornell field hockey team have been named to the 2023 NFHCA Watchlist sponsored by Victory Sports Tours. 
• Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey joins junior Olivia Friedberg, sophomore Grace Leahy and freshman Polly Parsons are among 131 student-athletes named to the initial list.
• Ramsey, an NFHCA third-team All-American in 2022, is a two-time all-region selection and a member of the U.S. National Team. 
• Friedberg was a member of the Canadian women's indoor national team this past season. 
• Leahy was the team's third-leading scorer a season ago as a freshman with five goals and 12 points, with three of her tallies going as game winners. 
• One of just 10 first year players to be recognized, Parsons joins the Big Red after being selected to compete for a spot at the Team USA U-21 National Training Camp. 

THE SCORE
• Cornell has scored multiple goals in nine consecutive games for the first time since going 11 consecutive contests during the 2010 season (8-3 over that span).
• Senior Caroline Ramsey's 14 goals through nine games has already nearly doubled her 2022 season total of eight and is approaching her single-season record of 18 set in 2021.
• Ramsey enters the week looking to build on her school record 101 points after setting the new mark in Sunday's win over Lehigh.
• With 45 career goals, Ramsey has already surpassed Krysten Mayers '18 who held a Big Red record of 42 scores.
• Ramsey has five game-winning goals this fall, matching a single-season school record (Alyssa DePaoloa in 2005, Claire Jones in 2019) and now has 11 for her career, second to Catie DeStio's 12 (2007-10).
• With a total of 13 assists through nine games, freshman Julia Ramsey is already tied for second in a single season and is making a run at Bridget Mahoney's 2021 record of 19.

IVY HONORS
• Three different Cornell players have earned Ivy League Player of the Week accolades so far this season.
• Senior Caroline Ramsey was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11 after tallying five goals with a key defensive save during a 1-2 weekend against NFHCA preseason top 20 opponents.
• She also captured the award on Sept. 25 after scoring seven goals with two assists for 16 points in wins over Dartmouth and Sacred Heart.
• Sophomore Grace Leahy (Offensive) and Martha Broderick (Defensive) captured weekly honors on Sept. 18 after helping Cornell to a 2-0 weekend, including a victory at Columbia in its Ivy League opener.
• Leahy scored three goals during the Big Red's unbeaten week, including a pair of goals in the team's Ivy League-opening 3-1 win at Columbia and a goal in the final three minutes of regular to send its game vs. American to overtime before the Big Red won 2-1.
• Broderick was 2-0 with nine saves and a 0.90 goals against average over two contests, making seven saves against American, including five after halftime, in the double overtime victory.

PENALTY SHOOTOUT
• Cornell's 3-2 loss to UAlbany (shootout, 4-3) was its first in a penalty shootout since the rule was implemented in 2011.
• It was the Big Red's first game to pass through two overtimes since its 1-0 win over Columbia on Oct. 5, 2019 when the Big Red won 1-0 before  Maddie Henry stopped all five of the Lions' attempts (shootout, 1-0).
• The Big Red is 2-1 in penalty shootouts since it was implemented in 2011 with its first-ever contest a 5-4 win vs. Dartmouth in 2018 (shootout, 2-0).
• In three shootouts, Cornell is 6-for-15 and opponents are 4-for-15 after failing on their first 10 attempts.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
• The Big Red entered the 2023 season picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason poll. 
• A finish of fourth or better would put the Big Red into the inaugural Ivy League Field Hockey Tournament in November.
• Eight members of Cornell's fall 2023 roster to be selected for either a senior national team or a junior selection camp, with Ramsey and Parsons (USA) and Friedberg and Leahy (Canada) joining Georgia Kelly (Ireland), Martha Broderick (Scotland), Annabel Cheveley (England) and Elizabeth Friedberg (Canada).
• With her 15 career defensive saves, Caroline Ramsey already owns the Cornell record.
• Ramsey, a two-time NFHCA first-team regional All-American is looking to become Cornell's first three-time first-teamer. She currently joins Karla Griffin, Carissa Mirasol and Marisa Siergiej as two-time picks.

UP NEXT
• The Big Red will play a single Ivy League contest next weekend when it welcomes Yale to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 12 p.m.
• The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
• Cornell leads the all-time series 24-19-1 and has won two of the past three meetings and six of the last eight between the programs.
