Lightweight Rowing Earns Pair of Medals at Head of the Charles

BOSTON — The Cornell men's lightweight rowing team claimed its second-ever Coleman Cup on Sunday afternoon at the Head of the Charles on the Charles River.

Completing the course with a time of 16:57.080, Cornell won its first Coleman Cup since 2015, and Sunday's finish ensured that the Big Red has won a medal in seven of its last nine appearances at the annual highly-regarded fall regatta.

The Big Red's 'A' four went wire-to-wire in its victory, opening up a 10-second lead upon reaching the Weld Exhibition — which was the halfway point on the course.

Penn, who concluded the event in second place, inched closer on Cornell as the Big Red held a six-second lead over the Quakers after crossing the final checkpoint on the course at the Cambridge Boat Club. Cornell ultimately edged Penn by 0.0743 seconds to earn the gold medal and regain possession of the Coleman Cup.

In the same event, Cornell's other entry finished in 11th place with a time of 17:20.241.

Along with the pair of entries in the Men's Lightweight Fours, Cornell also deployed a boat in the Men's Lightweight Eights, which earned a bronze medal following its time of 14:56.966. Only Harvard (14:51.920) and Penn (14:52.318) finished ahead of the Big Red.

Cornell's eight also had the lead when reaching the Weld Exhibition at 8:13.124, just over a second ahead of Harvard.
