Men's, Women's Polo Teams Set For UVa Fall Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell University men's and women's polo teams will look to build on strong starts to their seasons later this week at the University of Virginia fall tournament. 

The Big Red women (1-0) take on the University of Virginia on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to face Texas A&M or Kentucky in the championship game on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. The loser would play in the consolation game at 2 p.m.

The Cornell men's team (2-0) faces the University of  Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 27, at 4 p.m. The winner would move on to play UVa or Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. 

Notes on the men

  • The Big Red opened the season with an 18-6 win over Yale and an 18-16 win over the Denver Polo Club. 

  • Senior Patricio Fraga-Errecart led the Big Red with seven goals in each contest. 

  • Sophomore Benito Jaramillo Samper scored four goals against the Denver Polo Club, including the game-tying and game-winning tallies in the final minute. Denver led 16-13 before the Big Red's late rally. 

  • The Big Red lost to UVa and beat Southern Methodist University at the University of Virginia Fall Tournament last year. It beat SMU, Texas A&M and UVa to win the tournament in 2016. 

  • Cornell beat Kentucky 15-13 last November and has won four of the last six meetings in the series. 

Notes on the women

  • The Big Red used a 10-2 run in the second half to pull away from Skidmore in a 15-6 win on Friday. 

  • Isabella Braden led the Big Red with eight goals, scoring four of them in the second half. 

  • Junior Ava Ramachandran had three goals, and senior Charlotte Book had one. 

  • The Big Red lost to UVa and SMU at last year's University of Virginia Fall Tournament.  

  • UVa holds a 27-21 advantage in the series against Cornell. It won both matchups last season. 

  • The Big Red went 1-1 against Kentucky and 0-1 against Texas A&M last season.
