Field Hockey Hosts Yale On Saturday At Noon

ITHACA, N.Y. — The 20th-ranked Cornell field hockey team steps back into Ivy League play when Yale visits Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Oct. 7 at 12 p.m. The Big Red will attempt to keep pace with Ivy leaders Harvard (3-0) and Penn (3-0). The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

STORYLINES
• Cornell enters the contest having won six of its past seven contests with the lone defeat coming to preseason top 10 team Princeton on the road in a double overtime shootout.
• The Big Red established Ivy and program records for goals (12) and points (34) in a dominant 12-4 triumph over Colgate on Tuesday afternoon.
• Senior Caroline Ramsey, sophomore Grace Leahy and freshman Ashley Plzak each registered hat tricks in the victory
• Over its past five contests (4-1), Cornell is averaging 6.4 goals with three games of at least 20 points.
Caroline Ramsey holds Cornell career records for goals, points and defensive saves and enters the weekend one point shy of matching her single-season record for points (40) and one goal short of her own mark for season goals (18).
• She enters the weekend second nationally in goals per game (1.70) and points per game (3.90).
• The penalty corner operation of Julia Ramsey (inserter) and Claire Wolfe (stopper) hold the top two spots nationally in assists at 1.40 and 1.20, respectively.
• The matchup with Yale will be one to watch for the Ramsey family. Along with the Big Red's sister combo of senior Caorline and freshman Julia, Yale will field their cousins in junior Lily and freshman Emma, who are sisters. All four attended Oak Knoll School.
• The Big Red enters the weekend first nationally in goals (4.30)), assists (4.60) and points (13.20), second in scoring average (3.95) and fourth in scoring margin (2.29).

• Senior Caroline Ramsey, sophomore Grace Leahy and freshman Ashley Plzak scored three goals apiece as the 20th-ranked Cornell field hockey team set a program record with a dozen goals in a 12-4 win over Colgate on Tuesday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.
• Cornell set single game school records for goals (12) and points (33) in a game, Leahy and Plzak set career highs in goals and Ramsey added an assist for a seven-point game.
• With her 39 points on the season, Ramsey is one off the single-season Big Red record she established in 2021 (40).
• Cornell's 39 shots rank as the seventh-most in a game in school history.
• In all, 11 different players registered at least one point as Cornell obliterated previous marks for goals (nine, done four times) and points (27 vs. Bryant in 2008).
• Along with the hat trick trio, Antonia PackardJulia Ramsey and Claire Wolfe each tallied scores, with both Ramsey and Wolfe adding an assist. 
Elizabeth Friedberg was credited with two assists, with Rease ColemanOlivia FriedbergVivienne Mueller and Sarah Rogalski each posting one. 
Martha Broderick picked up her seventh win of the season in goal, making one save.
• The Big Red held a 39-8 edge in shots and a 14-5 advantage on penalty corners in the win.
• Ella Murphy had a goal and two assists to lead the Raiders, while goalkeeper Hayley Campbell made 10 saves over the final 45 minutes despite seeing an onslaught of 30 shots over that span.
• Alice Walton, Dani Palmer and Morgan Willis each had a score for the visitors.

RECORD WATCH
• Senior Caroline Ramsey's 17 goals and 39 points are both one shy of her own single-season records set in 2021.
• Ramsey's five game-winning goals is tied with Alyssa DePaola (2005) and Claire Jones (2019) for most in a season at Cornell.
• With 14 assists, Julia Ramsey is second in season assists, five behind Bridget Mahoney's 2021 record. Claire Wolfe isn't far behind with 12.
• As a team, Cornell is tied for second in a season with its 132 points, shy of the school record of 147 set in 2015.
• The team's 43 goals is seven short of the 50 scored in 2015, while its 46 assists is third and just on shy of the record of 47 set in 2015 and matched in 2021.
• Senior Claire Wolfe's 18 career assists ranks seventh all-time at Cornell, three short of sixth and four from reaching the top five.
• Sophomore Grace Leahy has 13 career scores, just two shy of joining Cornell's top 20.

THE SCORE
• Cornell has scored multiple goals in 10 consecutive games for the first time since going 11 consecutive contests during the 2010 season (8-3 over that span).
• Senior Caroline Ramsey's 17 goals through 10 games has already more than doubled her 2022 season total of eight and is one shy of her single-season record of 18 set in 2021.
• Ramsey enters the weekend looking to build on her school record 108 points after setting the new mark in Sunday's win over Lehigh.
• With 48 career goals, Ramsey has already surpassed Krysten Mayers '18 who held a Big Red record of 42 scores.
• Ramsey has five game-winning goals this fall, matching a single-season school record (Alyssa DePaoloa in 2005, Claire Jones in 2019) and now has 11 for her career, second to Catie DeStio's 12 (2007-10).
• With a total of 14 assists through 10 games, freshman Julia Ramsey is already tied for second in a single season and is making a run at Bridget Mahoney's 2021 record of 19.
• Cornell has four scorers with at least 14 points in the same season for the first time since 2015 (Krysten Mayers - 31, Marisa Siergiej - 23, Isabel Siergiej - 22, Katy Weeks - 21). Each ranks in the top 50 nationally in points per game.

IVY HONORS
• Three different Cornell players have earned Ivy League Player of the Week accolades so far this season.
• Senior Caroline Ramsey was named Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11 after tallying five goals with a key defensive save during a 1-2 weekend against NFHCA preseason top 20 opponents.
• She also captured the award on Sept. 25 after scoring seven goals with two assists for 16 points in wins over Dartmouth and Sacred Heart.
• Sophomore Grace Leahy (Offensive) and Martha Broderick (Defensive) captured weekly honors on Sept. 18 after helping Cornell to a 2-0 weekend, including a victory at Columbia in its Ivy League opener.
• Leahy scored three goals during the Big Red's unbeaten week, including a pair of goals in the team's Ivy League-opening 3-1 win at Columbia and a goal in the final three minutes of regular to send its game vs. American to overtime before the Big Red won 2-1.
• Broderick was 2-0 with nine saves and a 0.90 goals against average over two contests, making seven saves against American, including five after halftime, in the double overtime victory.

PENALTY SHOOTOUT
• Cornell's 3-2 loss to UAlbany (shootout, 4-3) was its first in a penalty shootout since the rule was implemented in 2011.
• It was the Big Red's first game to pass through two overtimes since its 1-0 win over Columbia on Oct. 5, 2019 when the Big Red won 1-0 before  Maddie Henry stopped all five of the Lions' attempts (shootout, 1-0).
• Cornell then fell 3-2 (shootout, 2-1) at Princeton, marking the first time the Big Red has played two games to shootouts in a single season.
• The Big Red is 2-2 in penalty shootouts since it was implemented in 2011 with its first-ever contest a 5-4 win vs. Dartmouth in 2018 (shootout, 2-0).
• In four shootouts, Cornell is 7-for-22 and opponents are 6-for-22 overall after failing on their first 10 attempts.

MISCELLANEOUS NOTES
• The Big Red entered the 2023 season picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League Preseason poll. 
• A finish of fourth or better would put the Big Red into the inaugural Ivy League Field Hockey Tournament in November.
• Eight members of Cornell's fall 2023 roster to be selected for either a senior national team or a junior selection camp, with Ramsey and Parsons (USA) and Friedberg and Leahy (Canada) joining Georgia Kelly (Ireland), Martha Broderick (Scotland), Annabel Cheveley (England) and Elizabeth Friedberg (Canada).
• With her 16 career defensive saves, Caroline Ramsey already owns the Cornell record.
• Ramsey, a two-time NFHCA first-team regional All-American is looking to become Cornell's first three-time first-teamer. She currently joins Karla Griffin, Carissa Mirasol and Marisa Siergiej as two-time picks.

FOUR NAMED TO NFHCA WATCHLIST
• Four members of the Cornell field hockey team have been named to the 2023 NFHCA Watchlist sponsored by Victory Sports Tours. 
• Senior All-American Caroline Ramsey joins junior Olivia Friedberg, sophomore Grace Leahy and freshman Polly Parsons are among 131 student-athletes named to the initial list.
• Ramsey, an NFHCA third-team All-American in 2022, is a two-time all-region selection and a member of the U.S. National Team. 
• Friedberg was a member of the Canadian women's indoor national team this past season. 
• Leahy was the team's third-leading scorer a season ago as a freshman with five goals and 12 points, with three of her tallies going as game winners. 
• One of just 10 first year players to be recognized, Parsons joins the Big Red after being selected to compete for a spot at the Team USA U-21 National Training Camp. 

UP NEXT
• The Big Red will close out its five-game home stand when it spends next weekend on Marsha Dodson Field when it will meet Ivy unbeaten Penn on Friday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m., then faces 11th-ranked Syracuse on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 2 p.m.
