Women’s Tennis Sweeps Niagara to Earn First Win of Spring Slate

ITHACA, N.Y. — The Cornell women's tennis team earned its first victory of the spring season with a 7-0 victory over Niagara at the Reis Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.

In doubles action, junior Lauren Stein and freshman Emma Baker combined for a 6-0 victory and fellow freshman Sofia Iantosca and senior Fatima El Ashram dropped just one match to secure the first point of the day.

Sophomore Lan Mi cruised in her match at No. 1 singles, posting a pair of 6-0 victories, while Iantosca also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, to put Cornell ahead by three.

Baker dropped just one point in her straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, to solidify the Big Red's first victory of the season.

El Ashram conceded three games – all in the first set – at the No. 4 spot, while Stein and freshman Tanya Fan each came back after losing the first set to win in three sets to round out the sweep for Cornell.

Looking Ahead

Cornell will return to action next weekend when the Big Red participates at the ECAC Indoor Championships, which will take place from Feb. 10-12, in Hanover, N.H.
