Having now spent 17 seasons directing the Cornell women's hockey program, Doug Derraugh has brought the Big Red to their place among the nation’s elite. Taking a program that won just four games in the season prior to his arrival, Derraugh guided the Big Red to the national title game in his fifth season and back-to-back-to-back NCAA Frozen Four appearances in 2010, 2011 and 2012, completely turning around the culture of the women’s hockey program at Cornell. Derraugh once again guided the Big Red to Frozen Four in 2019. He became the first Everett Family Head Coach of Women’s Ice Hockey when the position was endowed in December 2020.

PUCK DROP
• Cornell women's ice hockey team will host Ivy-League opponents Brown and #1 Yale on a weekend where the Big Red celebrate senior night.

BIG RED REWIND
• The Cornell Big Red are coming off a weekend where they took losses against ECAC Hockey opponents Clarkson and St.Lawrence.

• Clarkson led the contest wire to wire and never let up as Cornell fell 2-1 in a tight ECAC Hockey battle at Cheel Arena on Friday night.

• The Big Red went into the final period nursing a 2-0 lead against St. Lawrence but surrendered three consecutive goals to fall victim in overtime to the Saints rally on Saturday evening.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
• Junior forward Izzy Daniel has been on a tear for the Big Red. Daniel was named ECAC Hockey Forward of The Month (December) and is currently tied for fifth in the nation in points per game with 1.56.

• Senior forward Gillis Frechette is having a phenomenal season with 39 points coming byway of 14 goals and 25 assist (T-5th in points per game in the nation). Frechette is unselfish with the puck and is always looking to find her teammates for Big Red goals!

• Freshmen forward Jade Iginla had an impressive outing last time out against the Big Red, scoring two goals in which came during a power-play and short-handed.

• Sophomore goaltender Pia Dukaric has played exceptional this season, posting nine shutouts while totaling a .949 save percentage (1.14 GA avg).

QUICK LOOK AT THE NATIONAL RANKINGS 

• After opening the season ranked No. 12 team in the DCU/USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls, Cornell has remained among the top 15 in every poll iteration this year.

• In the most recent polls, Cornell moved to No. 14 (DCU/USCHO.com), while moving to No. 14 in the USA Hockey Magazine poll.

Kaitlyn Isaac - 7

Prior to Cornell, Isaac was a multi-sport athlete at Wallaceburg District Secondary School. She was a two-time captain of the soccer team to go along with a team MVP award that she earned in 2018. In 2017, she earned a silver medal as a member of the Ontario U18 Women’s National Championships Team. Since arriving to Cornell, Kaitlyn has protected the blue-line in 44 games and counting. As a freshman, she played a role in 23 games for the 2019-2020 Big Red team who were ranked first in the country. During her junior campaign, Isaac was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic list. The defensewoman registered her first Big Red goal this season at the Smashville Showcase against the fifth-ranked Northeastern Huskies.

Gillis Frechette - 11

Prior to Cornell, Frechette was a decorated athlete at St. Pauls School in Concord New Hampshire. She was a four-time letter winner during her St. Pauls stint and served as captain of the team in her senior campaign. Since arriving to Cornell, Gillis has registered 122 points and counting, coming by way of 50 goals and 72 assists. During her junior campaign, Frechette was the fourth skater Cornell in history to capture the honor of ECAC Hockey Player of The Year since its inception in 1985. This season she has taken the ice by storm as she ranks fifth in the nation in points per game.

Paige Kenyon - 17

Prior to Cornell, Kenyon was a two-time captain at Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School. She also spent time with the Stoney Creek Sabres, where she won the Final Four and Provincial Silver awards. Since arriving to Cornell, Paige has competed in 63 games at defense, nine of which came during the 2019-2020 campaign where the Big Red were the top team in the nation. During her junior campaign, Kenyon earned ECAC Hockey All-Academic honors. Paige registered the first Big Red goal of her career this season at Lynah Rink, that served as a late-game insurance marker against the ninth-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights in an 8-1 victory.

Elana Zingas - 19

Prior to Cornell, Zingas was a four-time captain at Grosse Pointe High School. She also spent time with the USA Hockey U16 team in 2017, where she won a national championship. Since arriving to Cornell, Elana has appeared in 72 contests for the Big Red, 18 of which came during the 2019-2020 season where the Big Red were ranked first in the nation. During that season, Zingas netted her first Big Red goal in a 4-0 victory against ECAC Hockey foe RPI. Zingas was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team in her junior season.

Ellie Zweber - 26

Prior to Cornell, Zweber competed in three years of varsity hockey at Selects Academy at Bishop Kearney High School. She is a two-time New York State hockey champion, with her titles coming in 2017 and 2019. Since arriving to Cornell, Ellie has seen action in 52 games. During her junior campaign, Zweber was named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic team. Zweber registered the first Big Red point of her career this season, against defending national champion Ohio State on an assist to a critical goal from Izzy Daniel.

ABOUT BROWN
• The Brown Bears currently hold a 8-16-1 (6-12-1 ECACH) record.

• Jade Iginla leads the way for the Bears with 19 points (14 goals, five assists), followed by India McDadi who has accounted for 11 points (three goals, eight assists) so far on the year.

• Kaley Doyle has started in 19 games at goaltender, posting a 7-11-1 record with a 2.57 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

THE SERIES
• Cornell leads the all-time series with Brown, 55-35-10. The Big Red outscored the Bears 4-2 during their last matchup earlier this season.

• The Bulldogs enter the weekend with a 23-1-1 (16-1-1 ECACH) record. Yale has been on a hot streak and is currently ranked first in the USA Today National Women's Hockey Poll.

• Elle Hartje leads the way for the Bulldogs with 33 points (nine goals, 24 assists), followed by Charlotte Welch who has registered 30 points (nine goals, 21 assists) on the season.

NEW HAVEN, CT -- (September 12, 2022)– #10 Women's ice hockey force overtime with three unanswered goals against #3 Yale in a ECAC top-10 battle. Both teams failed to notch a point in the extra period, resulting in a 4-4 tie.

Women's ice hockey fall to the No.9-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights 2-1 in an ECAC Hockey showdown at Cheel Arena on Friday night. Senior forward Gillis Frechette registered the lone Big Red goal of the contest.

Both teams got off to a strong defensive start, going shot-for-shot with neither team finding the back of the net.

The Golden Knights would notch two goals in the second period by Anne Cherkowski and Brooke McQuigge to go up 2-0 heading into the final period of play. 

The Big Red cut the lead to a manageable deficit midway throught the third period when Frechette netted the puck (assisted by Kenyon Paige and Lily Delianedis), to bring the score to 2-1. Cornell had it's fair share of shots in the final nine minutes but it was not enough as Clarkson escaped with the victory.

SATURDAY RECAP | BOX SCORE

Women's ice hockey visited Appleton Arena on Saturday evening for an ECAC Hockey matchup against the St. Lawrence Saints. The Big Red played strong in the first two periods, but surrendered three consecutive late-game goals leading to a 3-2 comeback home-victory for the Saints.

Gillis Frechette extended her point-streak to seven games with a first-period Big Red goal to give Cornell a 1-0 advantage. Mckenna Van Gelder added to the lead as she intercepted the puck and skated down the ice for an unassisted goal.

St.Lawrence put in a pair of goals late in the third period from Chloe Puddifant and Kristina Bahl to knot the game up at 2-2. The Saints put in their third consecutive goal, which came from Julia Gosling in overtime, to complete their rally efforts.

If you’ve never been to a Big Red hockey game at Cornell’s James Lynah Rink, there are quite a few things you’ve never experienced. You’ve never camped out in line just to get season tickets and ensure your spot as one of the raucous and devoted "Lynah Faithful." But most importantly, if you’ve never been to Lynah, you’ve never really experienced all the best that college hockey has to offer.

Lynah Rink, which turned 65 years old in 2022, is the home of Big Red hockey. The rink, which was dedicated April 6, 1957, was named in honor of the late James Lynah (class of 1905), director of athletics at Cornell from 1935-43.
