Kentucky’s Late Game Surge Takes Down Women’s Polo

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va -- A late-match surge by the Cornell women's polo team fell short to Kentucky in the national quarterfinals, 7-5. Lea Jih-Vieira had three of the Cornell goals on the day.

"We are incredibly proud of this group of young women for their dedication to Cornell and to Cornell Polo," said the Peter B. Orthwein '68 Head Coach of Polo, Anthony Condo, Jr. "Four of the starting five players leave us as Seniors, and they have left an indelible mark on our program. We will certainly miss them upon graduation."
"At the national level, the room for error is minuscule, and a few untimely bounces including a two-pointer capped off a 3 goal flurry for Kentucky in the sixth chukker which proved to be the difference in the game. Credit to Kentucky for their hard-earned win this afternoon."

A dead-heat first chukker saw no goals from either team, but Kentucky broke the seal in the second, scoring first on a penalty stroke and again in live-play before. Lara Chong had the first Big Red goal to end the second chukker with a 2-1 Kentucky lead. Kentucky's Caroline Moony was the first to score in the third chukker, but Lea Jih-Vieira's first goal off a penalty shot kept the Cornell deficit to one.

The fourth chukker saw just one more goal, a Jih-Vieira penalty shot to tie the game at three. Kentucky had the answer in the fifth, and extended its lead to 7-3 in sixth and final chukker. Jasmine Umrigar and Jih-Vieira started a Cornell comeback, but fell just short, losing 7-5.
