ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team won its first-ever MAISA Women's Team Race Championship on Sunday afternoon, securing the conference's automatic bid to the national championships as racing concluded on Cayuga Lake. The Big Red's 16-2 record over two days was one win ahead of runner-up Penn for the league title.
The Big Red wrapped up the championship in its final race, finishing 1-2-6 against Hobart & William Smith to cap off a 5-1 third round that was enough for victory. Cornell was 6-0 in round two to pass the Quakers, who were both 5-1 after round one, but with Penn's head-to-head win over the Big Red serving as the tiebreak.
Cornell's only two losses of the weekend came against Penn, who will hope for an at-large bid to the championships, which will be announced on Tuesday. Both teams had clear separation over third-place Georgetown, which went 9-9.
Skippering the Big Red all weekend were the foursome of
Bridget Green,
Meredith Moran,
J.J. Smith and
Sophia Devling, with
Gabbi DelBello,
Sophia Pearce,
Sophia Fogarty and
Amelia Neumann making up the crew.
The Open Team was eighth for the Owen Trophy at Kings Point, with its 208 points just shy of Coast Guard's 204 for seventh. A Division was sailed by Hayden Earl and
Sophia Mulvania, grabbing third place overall with nine top five finishes and two race wins in 14 starts. B Division was comprised of
Lucija Ruzevic as skipper and
Clara Hewson (races 1-8,11-14) and
Isabel Dhar (races 9-10), with the trio posting seven top 10 efforts.
Next up for the Big Red will be the MAISA Women's Dinghy Championships on Saturday and Sunday, April 22-23. Cornell will also compete for the Admiral's Cup at Kings Point next weekend.
