ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior
Yianni Diakomihalis became the first four-time EIWA Wrestler of the Year and
Vince Cornella earned Freshman of the Year when the conference announced its top awards this week. The awards were chosen by the conference's 17 head coaches.
The four-time EIWA and NCAA champion closed out his storied career with a 4-2 victory over Ohio State's Sammy Sasso in the 149 pound finals, completing a 21-1 season and that capped off a career that saw him go 115-2. A four-time Ivy League Wrestler of the Year, Diakomihalis had been one of just two three-time EIWA Wrestlers of the Year, joining Kyle Dake (2011, 12, 13). Since 1998, Cornell wrestlers have now claimed the EIWA's top award 16 times.
Cornella won his first EIWA title at 141 pounds as part of a 21-6 season. A first-team All-Ivy League pick, he opened the season with a win at the Bearcat Open and had win streaks of eight and nine matches during the season and posted nine total wins against ranked opponents. It is the 10th time a Big Red wrestler earned Freshman of the Year accolades and the first time since Diakomihalis brought home the award in 2018.
Cornell placed third at the NCAA Championships after capturing EIWA and Ivy League titles. Second-year head coach Mike Grey's team posted a 12-3 dual meet record during the regular season.
