Sailing Finishes Sixth at Team Racing Nationals, Cleans Up In MAISA All-Conference Honors

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team finished sixth at the Women's Team Race National Championships and grabbed ninth at the America Trophy national qualifier this weekend, with Big Red sailors earning plenty of league recognition along the way. Senior Gabbi DelBello was named MAISA Crew of the Year and was joined on the all-conference first team by Amelia Neumann, with Sophia Pearce and Sophia Mulvania each second-team picks.

Cornell reached the final six of the 12 teams, going 7-9 to finish third in the Ivy standings with its team race finish. Yale won its second straight national and Ivy title, with Brown placing third overall and second among conference teams. The Big Red had its highest finish in school history and placed ahead of Penn, Harvard and Dartmouth.

Bridget Green, Sophia Devling, Meredith Moran and J.J. Smith served as skippers, while DelBello, Neumann, Fogarty and Pearce crewed the weekend racing. 

The Big Red went 6-5 in round one to advance to the final six. with wins over Dartmouth, Tulane, Harvard, Penn, Charleston and Michigan. Cornell went 1-4 in the second round with a triumph over Boston College, but did not advance to the final four.

The Big Red placed ninth for the America Trophy, missing out on an automatic qualifying spot, but positioning itself for a possible at-large bid. Cornell's 214 points tied for eighth with Fordham, but lost out on a head-to-head tiebreaker.

In A Division, Hayden Earl and Sophia Mulvania grabbed fifth with 74 points, just eight out of second. Out of 12 weekend races, Cornell had seven top five finishes with one winner. B Division featured Lucija Ruzevic and Clara Hewson posting a pair of top 10 efforts as part of the championship weekend.

Cornell will continue training up to the ICSA Women's Nationals beginning on THursday, May 25 at Kings Point, N.Y.
