KINGS POINT, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team finished fourth at the College Sailing Women's National Championship on Friday afternoon at Kings Point. The finish was the highest in program history, behind a third-place effort in 2013.
The Big Red's 148 points in head coach
Lior Lavie's first season were 10 behind third-place Boston College. Stanford claimed the national title with 96 points, with Yale second with 123. The teams were only able to get in 10 races total and didn't hit the water at all on Friday due to lack of wind. That didn't dampen the Big Red's effort.
After finishing fourth in the Eastern Semifinals to qualify on Wednesday, Cornell placed four spots above its seeding in the finals. It was 10 points ahead of fifth-place Bowdoin (158).
A Division grabbed third overall, while B Division sailed to sixth.
Bridget Green skippered with
Lucija Ruzevic (races 1-2) and
Gabbi DelBello (races 3-10) as crew. That group recorded seven top 10 efforts, including a win in the fourth start on Thursday.
Sophia Devling (races 1-2) and
Meredith Moran (races 3-10) skippered B Division with
Amelia Neumann as crew, with the Big Red posting nine top 10 efforts with a best of second in the seventh race.
Sophia Fogarty,
Sophia Mulvania,
Sophia Pearce and
J.J. Smith served as reserves for the Big Red.
Cornell closes the season when it competes at the ICSA Open Dinghy National Championship beginning on Tuesday, May 30.
