SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The 2023 World Lacrosse Championships is painted red as the tournament approaches its final day. Big Red alumni are on all sides of the top four teams, with Rob Pannell representing the number one seed of Team USA, Jeff Teat and Clarke Petterson on Team Canada, Kason Tarbell on the Haudenosaunee team, and 2022 graduate
Tim Graham on Australia. Team Italy, who is battling against Puerto Rico in the ninth-place game, features
John Piatelli and Christian Pastirik.
All seven Big Red have collectively totaled 33 goals, 35 assists, 40 groundballs, and six caused turnovers. Piatelli leads the bunch in points, with 14 goals and 10 assists, and ranks second in scoring on Team Italy. Graham has won a cumulative 34-of-49 faceoffs taken, including a perfect 7-for-7 against England. Pannell has rewritten the history books for Team USA, moving his international-career goal total to 71 entering championship weekend, breaking the previous record of 68 set by Mark Millon, to become the country's all-time leading scorer.
Puerto Rico and Italy face off today, Friday, June 30, at 4 p.m. on ESPN+, while Australia and the Haudenosaunee team compete on Saturday, July 1, at 4 p.m. on ESPNU for the bronze medal. Team USA and Team Canada wrap up the tournament with the championship match on Saturday, July 1, at 7 p.m. on ESPN2.
