LEWISBURG, Pa. -- The Cornell volleyball team (1-1, 0-0 Ivy) dropped a five-set marathon to the William & Mary Tribe on Saturday afternoon in its second game of the Bucknell Invitational.
Sophomore Eliza Konvicka led the way with 19 kills and 12 digs, while first-year player Jaida Sione recorded 13 kills and nine digs for the Big Red.
Â
Set One
Much like Friday's opening set against Niagara, the Big Red battled back and forth with the Tribe for momentum. Both teams traded points early on until William & Mary went on a 7-0 run to push the set in their favor, 15-9. The Big Red tried to claw its way back, as a kill by senior Alexa Orent cut the deficit to five. However, the Tribe would go on an 8-1 run to clinch the first set, 25-13.

Set Two
With momentum on the Tribe's side, the Big Red came out firing in the second set, starting out on a 3-0 run highlighted by a Konvicka kill and stuff block by Orent and senior Sydney Moore. The Tribe would then go a run of their own, eventually tying the match at six points apiece. Both teams continued to trade points until a great set and kill combo from Orent and Konvicka gave the Big Red a 13-12 lead. The Tribe would tie things up at 20 later in the set, but Cornell would have none of it, finishing on a 5-0 run to tie the match at one set apiece.
Â
Set Three
Much like the first set, both the Big Red and Tribe struggled to gain any momentum early on, as neither team had a lead more than two halfway through. However, a kill by Moore late in the set proved costly for the Tribe, as it gave Cornell a 21-20 lead. The Big Red would never give up the lead again, as a stuff block by Konvicka and junior Camryn Carlo and a set-finishing kill by Konvicka gave Cornell the third set, 25-23. The Big Red also had a match-high 17 kills in the third set, with 11 coming from Konvicka and Sione combined.Â
Â
Set Four
The Tribe battled back early in the fourth set, taking a 5-4 lead on a kill by Taylor Burnell. The Big Red tried to swing the momentum back in its favor, as kills by Konvicka and Moore cut the deficit to one (9-8). However, the Tribe would go on a 7-0 run after the Konvicka kill to run ahead 16-9. The Big Red would cut the deficit to as low as five, but the Tribe eventually closed out the set on a kill by Sarah Callendar, pushing the match to a decisive fifth set.
Â
Set Five
Five lead changes started the penultimate set, as both team battled for position. A kill by Sabrina Malcolm proved to be the difference maker for the Tribe, as it took a 5-4 lead. William and Mary would never give the lead back, closing the set on a 9-6 run to hand Cornell its first loss of the season.
