#11 Big Red Falls To Defending National Champion #2 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team fell to the no. 2-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in the Icebreaker Tournament Championship 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at the Schottenstein Center. The Big Red dropped to 1-2-1, white the Buckeyes improved to 9-2-2.

Katie Chan, Avi Adam, and Karel Prefontaine registered Big Red goals in the game. Alyssa Regalado (two), Ashley Messier (two), and Mckenna Van Gelder were credited with helpers in the contest. Annelies Bergmann collected 18 saves on the day.

The Big Red got out to a high-paced start, managing a couple of early grade-A opportunities on net, to no avail. Three-minutes into the opening period Bergmann would fall victim to an Ohio State deflection which gave the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead. Ohio State doubled that lead nine minutes later when Kiera Zanon found the back of the net.

Katie Chan got the Big Red on the board late in the first-period, cutting the deficit in half. The Buckeyes would strike back with seconds remaining in the first period, giving them a 3-1 advantage.

Ohio State gained a three point lead early in the second stanza. Cornell responded by netting two consecutive goals, coming from Adam and Prefontaine (power-play). The Big Red found itself on the power-play at the end of the second period with a chance to find the equalizer, but it would be Ohio State who would extend its lead with a short-handed tally to move the score to 5-3.

The Buckeyes added insurance in the third scoring a pair of goals to earn the championship victory at the Icebreaker Tournament.
