WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Cornell men's basketball team put on an offensive clinic in its first visit to Army West Point in nearly two decades, shooting 56 percent from the floor overall and connecting on 19 3-pointers in a wild 103-84 victory on Sunday afternoon at Christl Arena. The Big Red improved to 6-3, while the Black Knights slipped to 5-4.
Cornell assisted on 27 baskets, tied for the 11th-most in a single game in Cornell history, with a majority of those passes leading to 3-pointers. The team had 19 and made 10-of-11 to start the second half, ending the night 19-of-35. The makes represented the third-most in a game in school history and the second-most against a Division I opponent.
Four Big Red players reached double figures and three more had at least eight points as everyone contributed to the victory.
Nazir Williams scored a game-high 20 points, while
Cooper Noard chipped in 17,
Jake Fiegen notched 16 and
Guy Ragland Jr. had 13 to go along with six rebounds and five assists.
AK Okereke nearly posted a double-double with eight points, nine boards and six assists, while both
DJ Nix and
Anthony Nimani had career highs of nine points apiece in the victory. Nix added four rebounds, while Nimani had two assists and a steal.
While the Big Red offense was on target throughout the afternoon, Army West Point was no slouch either. Four reached double figures, with Josh Scovens and Jalen Rucker tallying 17 each, with the home team shooting 48 percent overall and making 11-of-27 shots from beyond the arc. The Black Knights had 18 assists and just eight turnovers in the loss. Ryan Curry was credited with 13 points, seven rebounds and six assists and AJ Allenspach registered 12 points and 11 rebounds.
FIRST HALF
• Cornell used an 11-0 run to close the first half to take a 49-32 lead into the break.
• The Big Red shot 51 percent from the floor overall and connected on nine first half 3-pointers while committing just a single turnover.
• Noard hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points in this 16 minutes of action, while Fiegen scored 10.
• After the Black Knights controlled the glass in the opening minutes, the visitors had a 21-14 edge on the glass by the break.
• Cornell took the lead on a 3-pointer by Fiegen 5:40 into the contest and never looked back, outscoring the home team 17-8 over the next five minutes.
• Army West Point cut the lead to four with just over 6:00 to play at 29-25.
• From there, Cornell closed the half outscoring the Black Knights 20-7, including the 11-0 edge heading into the break.
SECOND HALF
• Williams took over in the second half, scoring 16 points and hitting all four of his 3-pointers as the Big Red shot 61 percent from the floor and made 10-of-16 3-pointers to cement the victory.
• The Big Red built the lead to 20 less than a minute into the second half on a conventional three-point play by Ragland Jr.
• The two teams traded baskets for much of the next four minutes, with each team scoring on four consecutive possessions.
• Made 10-of-11 3-pointers to start the second half and didn't wilt as the Black Knights went shot-for-shot for a time.
• The home team got within 76-61 with 11:34 left, but Cornell hit three consecutive 3-pointers over the span of just 52 seconds and seven 3-pointers in less than three minutes of action.
• When the shooting barrage was over, Cornell led 96-66 with just 8:13 and the only thing to be decided was the final score.

• Cornell will play its final game prior to the final exams break when it visits California on Tuesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif.
