Boisrenoult, Gruvberger Put on Show in 100 Fly in Day Three of Ivy Championships

2/23/2024 10:25:00 PM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was another successful day of swimming for the Cornell women's swimming and diving team on Friday from Rhode Island, as the Big Red shattered two more program records and had many season-best swims on day three of the Ivy League Championships.

Friday's preliminary swims started with fireworks, as Anna Gruvberger (53.44) and Emilie Boisrenoult (53.61) swam themselves into the A-Final of the 100 butterfly. Starting beside each other in lanes one and two, Boisrenoult (53.33) and Gruvberger (53.34) fed off each other, besting their preliminary scores by a combined 0.38 seconds to finish sixth and seventh overall. Those times are also now 1-2 all-time for the seniors, besting the previous record of 53.87 set by Boisrenoult during last year's championships in New Jersey. Those performances by the senior duo also hit the B cut time for the NCAA championships.

The second event of the evening had three Big Red athletes make the three heats in the 400 IM. Freshman Hojung Yoon improved her seeded time by over a second (4:22.13) to qualify for the B-Final, while underclassmen counterpart Katherine Yee and junior Allie Danko qualified for the C-Final. Yoon would continue that trend into the finals, shaving nearly another second off her time to earn 15 points for the Big Red with a time of 4:21.62. Yee also put in a better time in the C-Final, swimming the third-best final split of 28.33 with a 4:24.34 to earn bronze, while Danko earned a point for the Big Red with the final spot in the final.

Shifting to the 200 freestyle, three sophomore Cornellians represented the Big Red, with a competitor in each of the three finals. Kate Li qualified for the A-Final with a season-best 1:48.40. She followed that up with a 1:48.95 in the top heat to earn sixth overall. Jungmin Yoon represented Cornell in the B-Final, besting her prelim time with a 1:49.69 to secure fifth overall in the heat. Sophomore Ella Martinez was the third and final swimmer for the Big Red in the C-Final, securing two points with a 1:52.04.

Two more swimmers competed for Cornell in the 100 breaststroke finals in sophomore Audrey Holden (1:02.91) and senior Amy Wu (1:04.73). Holden swam in the B-Final, shaving 0.28 seconds off her morning time to earn a tie for fifth with Brown's Amie Barrow and secure 13.5 points. Wu also had a great time in the C-Final, knocking a second off her morning session time to snag fourth in the third-fastest heat.

The final individual event of the evening was the 100 backstroke, as freshman Ming Xu (55.71) and senior Marie Williams (55.91) found themselves in the C-Final. Xu put together an excellent shift in the final, using a race-best 26.80 opening split to earn the top spot (55.36), while Williams earned fourth in the heat (56.02).

Cornell would close out Friday's evening session with the 400 medley relay, as Ming Xu, Audrey Holden, Anna Gruvberger, and Priscilla Wongso jumped on the block for the final time this season. The quartet would show out in a big way, clocking a new school record 3:40.91, thanks to a 49.33 final shift by Wongso. That time broke the previous record of 3:42.94 set during the 2023 championships hosted by Princeton.

After three days of action, Cornell sits in seventh place in the team standings with 411 points, putting them within striking distance of besting its highest point total since securing 606 in the 2018 championships.

The final day of action from Rhode Island begins Saturday at 11 a.m., with preliminary races followed by the finals at 6 p.m. Both sessions will stream on ESPN Plus. Check out the full schedule of events for Saturday's slate below.
