WATCHUNG, N.J. -- Freshman Tyler Debusschere had a day to remember Friday, carding a 2-under-69 to sit tied for third after the opening round of the 2024 Ivy League Men's Golf Championship from Watchung Valley Golf Club. The Big Red shot 299 as a team, putting them in a tie for sixth with Dartmouth after 18 holes.
Heading out as the final grouping on the day, Debusschere started the round with a bogey on the second hole before knocking in an eagle on the par-5 third to get to one-under. The freshman suffered a setback with another bogey a hole later before knocking in his first birdie of the day on the par-five fifth to fall back to one-under par. Par-fives were a thing of beauty for Debusschere, finishing the final hole of the day with another birdie to roll into the clubhouse with a share of third with Yale's Ben Carpenter and Robert You. He also had the best performance out of any golfer in the field on par-five, going four under.
Weston Warden followed with a birdie and five bogeys to finish the opener with a four-over 75 and share of 24th with Penn's George Roessler. Viktor Stollinger, who is making his first appearance at the championships, struggled with three-over on both the front and back nine to put him 27th overall with a six-over 77. Jackson Debusschere sits behind Stollinger in 32nd at seven-over through the opening round. The junior did have two birdies on the round but started the back nine with a seven on the par-four 10th to slide back on the leaderboard.
Princeton leads the way after putting together a two-under 282. The Tigers sit four strokes ahead of Yale and Harvard. Penn's Max Fonseca has the individual lead at five-under, two strokes ahead of Princeton's William Huang.
Day two of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship kicks off at 10 a.m. tomorrow for Watchung Valley Golf Club.
