Penn Claims Madeira Cup, Wray Trophy; Heavyweight Rowing Sweeps Holy Cross

ITHACA, N.Y. — For the third time since 2007, the Penn men's heavyweight rowing program claimed the Madeira Cup, snapping the Big Red's three-race tenure of holding the trophy after posting a 5.9-second victory over Cornell on the Cayuga Inlet on Saturday morning.

The Quakers ended up posting four victories in the five races between the Ivy League programs on Saturday, also registering triumphs in the 2V8, 3V8, and 5V8, en route to earning the Wray Trophy for the first time in 15 races.

Penn's win in the 5V8 came down to a photo finish as both crews clocked a time of 6:05.6 and was deemed the winner, claiming the race by one inch.

Cornell's lone victory against Penn came in the 3V8, where it registered a victory of 5.1 seconds with its 5:52.5 time.

Following an hour-long break, Cornell returned to the water to face Holy Cross, where the Big Red ended up posting a trio of first-place finishes.

The Big Red's varsity eight had the largest margin of victory in its races against Holy Cross, posting a nine-second win after its 5:40.7 time. In the JV and 3V8 races, Cornell logged respective victories of 7.4 and 5.0 seconds.
