Lightweight Rowing 1V4+ Places Fourth in V4 Final at IRA National Championship

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — The Cornell men's lightweight rowing 1V4+ crew finished in fourth place in the 1V4+ 'A' Final on Saturday morning on the second day of the 2024 IRA National Championship on Mercer Lake.

Georgetown earned the wire-to-wire victory over the sextet of Ivy League programs after clocking a time of 6:24.087, which was 3.356 seconds ahead of Columbia (6:27.443).

Cornell and Penn jockeyed for third place over the opening 1000 meters as the Quakers opened the first 500 with a time of 1:36.690 and Cornell was right behind by 20-thousandths of a second (1:36.710). The Big Red clocked its fastest 500-meter time of the entire race between the 500- and 1000-meter marks, posting a 1:37.972 clip to narrowly get ahead of Penn by 0.164 seconds.

Penn assumed third place for good in the following 500-meter segment after registering a time of 1:38.482, which was 2.664 seconds better than Cornell. The Quakers concluded the 2000-meter course with a time of 6:30.820 to earn bronze, finishing just under five seconds seconds ahead of Cornell's time of 6:35.780.

A LOOK UPSTREAM
Cornell will have its pair of varsity eight crews return to the water on Sunday morning for its finals races on the third and final day of the 2024 IRA National Championship on Mercer Lake.

The 2V8+ crew will launch first on Sunday, racing out of the fifth lane in Sunday's 2V8+ final, which is scheduled for a 9:50 a.m. start. It will go up against crews from Yale, Navy, Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Penn. On Friday, in a heat to determine the lane assignments, Cornell finished in fourth place with a time of 5:58.350 behind Harvard (5:53.277), Princeton (5:55.510), and Navy (5:55.533).

In Cornell's final lightweight race of the three-day championship, the Big Red's 1V8+ crew will have its race begin at 10:40 a.m., racing out of lane six. Competition for the race will be Navy, Dartmouth, Penn, Harvard, and Princeton.
