Six To Join Big Red Men's Hoops For 2024-25 Season

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's basketball team will welcome six newcomers for the upcoming 2024-25 campaign. The five freshmen and sophomore transfer will help Cornell in its quest for the program's first Ivy League title since 2009-10. 
 

#11 Ty Iwanonkiw

Fr. • 6-9 • 205 • Pittsburgh, Pa. (North Allegheny HS) 
First-team all-league and second-team all-section in his final season at North Allegheny HS ... was second on the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and rebounding (4.7 rpg.) as a senior ... was a first-tam all-section pick as a junior after posting 11.6 and 5.9 rebounds while shooting 37 percent from 3-point range ... two-year team captain ... chosen to competed in the Roundball Classic.

#34 AJ LaBeau

So. • 6-10 • 230 • Boise, Idaho (Timberline HS/Washington State) 
Spent one season redshirting at Washington State ... was a two-time honorable mention all-conference selection at Timberline HS ... averaged 9.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game while shooting 52 percent from the floor as a senior ... led his team to the second round of the state tournament ... invited to compete in the regional and state all-star games.

"AJ is a hard-playing, skilled post player with a bright future. On an NCAA Tournament team at Washington State, AJ played with and against very good players, which should serve him well in his transition to the extremely competitive Ivy League."
 

#7 Anthony Nimani

Fr. • 6-4 • 190 • Meriden, Conn. (Platt HS/The Berkshire School) 
Was a two-time all-state selection at Platt HS, earning first-team honors as a senior and second-team accolades as a junior ... averaged 25.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.0 steals per game his senior year when he led the team to the state semifinals ... three-time all-conference pick ... two-time Record-Journal Player of the Year ... school's all-time leading scorer with 1,626 points ... earned first-team all-NEPSAC in Class A during a postgrad year at the Berkshire School ... first-team all-WNE.

#4 Gioacchino Panzini 

Fr. • 6-5 • 200 • Spring Lake, N.J. (Saint Rose HS) 
Panzini earned first-team all-league honors as a senior at Saint Rose HS ... led the team to a pair of state sectional titles and a state group championship in his final season ... averaged 10.3 points and 6.0 rebounds per game as a senior, earning league tournament MVP honors ... two-year captain.

"Gioacchino is versatile forward who impacts the game in a variety of ways and plays with high effort. He has done a lot of winning in his high school career, so we are looking forward to adding him to our program."
 

#6 Mateen Rafiq 

Fr. • 6-0 • 170 • Sacramento, Calif. (Weston Ranch HS) 
Scored 2,186 career points as a three-time first-team all-league pick at El Camino and Weston Ranch HS ... first-team all-section as a senior after averaging 23.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 rebounds and 2.4 steals per contest ... averaged 26.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 4.2 steals per game as a junior ... made 434 career 3-pointers at a 45 percent clip, including leading the nation with 163 in his senior year ... for his career, averaged 20.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.7 steals in 107 games ... Synergy basketball ranked him the most efficient high-volume scorer in the country as a senior ... was once named league MVP and twice named to the Sacramento All-Metro team.

#13 AJ Rodriguez 

Fr. • 6-6 • 200 • Westchester, N.Y. (Iona Prep HS/St. Thomas More) 
Helped his St. Thomas More squad to a 28-9 record during a prep season in 2023-24 ... earned third-team all-state as a senior captain at Iona Preparatory in 2022-23 ... was a first-team all-league pick after averaging 18.7 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.1 assists per contest ... elected varsity captain as a senior ... first-team all-league as a junior.
