Box Score 3 NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Big Red wrapped up week one of the 2023-24 season with 15 wins across three days of competition at the Lion Invite. Cornell faced off against Ivy opponent Columbia, while also competing against Indiana, Wagner and Stony Brook.
Cornell opened the season against Indiana on Friday. The team started off with a bit of a struggle as they dropped all four doubles matches to Indiana to start off the weekend. However, in the singles matches that followed, Cornell posted three individual victories. Michelle Ryndin defeated Nicole Teodesescu in two sets (6-4, 6-2), Sage Loudon defeated Lara Schneider (6-4, 7-5) and Jenny Wong defeated Elisabeth Dunac in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 10-5).
On day two, the Big Red faced off against Columbia in an Ivy League matchup. Seychelle Balog had the lone win for Cornell as she defeated Clarine Lerby in three close sets (5-7, 6-4, 10-8). Loudon forced Fatima Keita to three sets after blanking her in the second 0-6, but she ultimately fell to her Columbia opponent in set three 10-7.
On day three Cornell faced two different opponents. The day started off with doubles matches against Stony Brook. The Big Red doubles won three of the four matchups. Loudon and Wong as well as Alex Savu and Ryndin defeated their opponents 6-4 and Martina Marica and Balog won 6-2.
Next they faced off against Wagner in both doubles and singles where the Big Red swept the Seahawks. In doubles, Savu and Ryndin as well as Emma Baker and Balog both blanked their doubles opponents 6-0 and Loudon and Wong defeated their opponents 6-1. In the singles matches, five of the six were decided in two sets. Marica, whose match went to three sets, had to battle her way to close out Cornell's day three in a sweeping fashion, which she did ending set three 10-8.
