Sailing Aims to Defend MAISA Women’s Title, Continue War Memorial Success

| By:

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell sailing team will close out fall team sailing when it competes in the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy and the War Memorial Open Championship beginning on Saturday, Oct. 25. The Women's Fall Championship will be hosted by Fordham, while the Open racing will be on Seneca Lake and hosted by Hobart and William Smith.

Cornell will be among 14 teams vying for the Women's Fall Dinghy championship, and the Big Red will be looking for its first repeat titles since the 2018 and 2019 seasons.

Last season, the Big Red captured its first fall conference title since 2021 and fourth overall with a dominant victory at the MAISA Women's Fall Dinghy Championship. The Big Red swept both divisions, with Bridget Green '25 and Amelia Neumann '25 winning A Division and Winborne Majette and Sophia Mulvania '25 taking B Division, combining for 11 race wins and 59 total points. The team easily cleared second-place Georgetown (112 points) in a dominant weekend.

Cornell sailing placed sixth overall at the 2024 War Memorial Regatta, finishing sixth in both the A and B divisions. Sophia Devling and Sophia Fogarty led the A Division with four top-three finishes, while Ava Gustafson and Gilda Dondona, along with Mulvania and Ava Stevens, combined for four podium results and a race win in B Division.

Cornell's best-ever finish at the War Memorial came two seasons ago when the team was the runner-up, its fourth straight top 10 finish. The Big Red placed sixth last year.

Cornell will close out the fall slate next week when Dondona competes at the ICSA Single-Handed Nationals in Norfolk, Va., from Saturday, Nov. 8 through Sunday, Nov. 9. Dondona was the national runner-up last fall and is a two-time Faye Bennett Singlehanded conference champ.
