Wrestling Takes One Final Dual Road Trip This Season

ITHACA, N.Y. –  The No. 9 Cornell wrestling team take a trip across country to face the Arizona State Sun Devils at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday at 2 p.m. MST

ALL ABOUT ARIZONA STATE

Arizona State is 4-7 on the season coming off a loss at No. 14 Iowa State. Figueroa and Shay Addison each earned pin-fall wins in their last match and Schultz picked up his 98th career win for the Sun Devils.

The dual will be held at the Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, former home of the Phoenix Suns.

The Sun Devils return national champion Richard Figueroa at 125 pounds. No. 2 Figueroa made his way past No. 25 Ethan Berginc (Army), No. 9 Patrick McKee (Minnesota), No. 1 Braeden Davis (Penn State), No. 12 Anthony Noto and No. 3 Drake Ayala (Iowa) in Kansas City last spring in route to his title.

Arizona State also returns four-time All-American No. 5 Cohlton Schultz at 285 as well as national qualifiers Julian Chlebove, No. 21 Jesse Vasquez and Cael Valencia.

The Sun Devils have had four consecutive seasons where at least four have earned All-American honors.

Arizona State has three more duals this season with Oklahoma, Lehigh, and West Virginia left on their plate before the Big 12 Championships.

BIG RED IVY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS!

The Big Red earned its fourth consecutive Ivy League title with a 26-10 win over the Penn Quakers in Friedman Wrestling Center on Sunday afternoon.

Since 2001, Cornell has won the Ivy League title 22 times with this being the 44th total since 1956.

Since Mike Grey became head coach in 2021 Cornell has not lost an Ivy dual.

The Big red claimed a 32-8 win over Ivy League opponent Princeton to open the weekend on Saturday. Tyler Ferrara and Josh Saunders got the dual going for the Big Red. Saunders achieved a ranked win over No. 29 Eligh Rivera.

The next four matches earned Cornell bonus points. Ethan Fernandez earned a major decision, then the Big Red racked up three straight technical falls from Meyer Shapiro, Julian Ramirez and Simon Ruiz. Chris Foca then grabbed a ranked win for himself over No. 27 Kole Mulhauser at 184 pounds. Then Ashton Davis finished the match out with a 5-0 decision over Sebastian Garibaldi.

Then on Sunday afternoon, Tyler Ferrara and Meyer Shapiro each got ranked wins to put Cornell on the board in the battle against Penn.

After the half, the Big Red came out swinging. Julian Ramirez opened up with a 17-1 technical fall over Andy Troczynski to put Cornell into the lead for the first time in the dual.

Cornell didn't stop after that. No.11 Simon Ruiz upset No.10 Nick Incontrera in a 4-3 decision. Mikey Dellagatta then went to grab bonus points for the Big Red with a 10-0 major decision. Ashton Davis rounded out the match with a 9-6 decision to secure the win for Cornell

AND IVY LEAGUE WRESTLER OF THE WEEK??!!!

Simon Ruiz has been named the Ivy League's Wrestler of the Week. This is his second accolade from the league this season.

The freshman collected two Ivy wins over the weekend against Princeton and Penn in route to a team Ivy Championship title.

No. 11 Ruiz defeated Xavier Giles 17-2 by technical fall at 3:40 by racking up a pair of takedowns and a near fall in the first period before adding a two more quick takedowns and an escape in the second. Then, on Sunday, Ruiz pulled off an upset against No. 10 Nick Incontrera of Penn. In a tight, nail-biting match, Ruiz came out on top with a 4-3 victory.

BIG RED TIDBITS

Five Big Red wrestlers find themselves on the first coaches' ranking for the 2025 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. A minimum of eight matches were required to be ranked.

Josh Saunders (141) ranked 24th, Ethan Fernandez (149) ranked 18th, Julian Ramirez (165) ranked 5th, Simon Ruiz (174) ranked 12th and Mikey Dellagatta (197) ranked 23rd.

Cornell breaks into the top 10 of the NWCA Division I Coaches Poll at ninth as well as tenth on InterMat and FloWrestling charts.

Julian Ramirez (9-0) and Chris Foca (9-0) remain undefeated in duals since their midseason return.

Meyer Shapiro has won nine consecutive matches since losing at the Journeyman Classic.

Freshman Simon Ruiz leads the team in total wins this season with 18 and bonus points wins with 11.
