Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. — Cornell women's tennis held strong in a tight match with Penn on Saturday morning as they defeated the Quakers 4-2 in the loser's side of the ECAC Indoor Championships.
Cornell started off strong with doubles play as it took two of the three matches, earning the Big Red the doubles point and giving them a 1-0. Victoria Zhao and Sage Loudon defeated Lara Stojanovski and Maya Urata 6-2, Jenny Wong and Andrea Martinez defeated Eileen Wang and Elizabeth Tkachenko 6-4 and Michelle Ryndin and Alexandra Savu lost to Gavriella Smith and Sasha Motlagh 6-3.
In singles play it was a back and forth tight battle between the two teams. Stojanovski defeated Zhao 6-3, 6-1 to tie the match at 1-1. Martinez answered for the Big Red with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Roshkoff to put Cornell up 2-1. Motlagh then evened the score at 2-2 for Penn as she defeated Emma Baker 6-2, 6-2. Jenny Wong was up next as she won her match against Urata 6-3, 6-2, to put the Big Red up 3-2 with one singles match left to play. The final singles match of the day was between Loudon and Smith. Smith took the first set 6-4, but Loudon was able to come back and win the next two sets 6-2, 6-4 to secure a 4-2 victory for Cornell.
With the win, Cornell moves on to the next day of the ECAC Indoor Championship and will compete on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 8:00 a.m. against either Brown or Dartmouth.
