ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell senior
CJ Kirst won Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth time in five weeks, but for the first time in his career, he did it while leading the No. 1 team in the country.
Kirst continued to dominate the weekly awards after a 10-point effort in a 19-14 win at Yale, a preseason top 10 team. Kirst scored a career-best nine goals, one off the school's single-game record, with six coming in the first quarter as Cornell set the tone. He added three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win, becoming the first Cornell player in school history to reach 200 career goals (202) and the third to surpass 275 points (280). He was credited with the game-winning goal, his second straight as the Big Red improved to 2-0 in Ivy League competition.
His efforts assisted Cornell's move into the top spot in this week's Inside Lacrosse Top 25 media poll, leaping from No. 4 after the three teams ahead of it - Maryland, Penn State and Army West Point - all suffered weekend losses. The Big Red, meanwhile, defeated preseason top 10 foe Yale 19-14 on the road to vault into the top spot for the first time since May of 2007, when it ended the regular season in the top spot after going nine consecutive weeks at No. 1 entering the NCAA Tournament. Cornell was ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll.
