Four Men's Squash Players Set for CSA Individual Championships in New York City

| By:
ITHACA, N.Y. — Four Cornell men's squash representatives will take their talents to New York City this weekend as the CSA Individual National Championships get underway Friday afternoon at Open Squash - FiDi.

Junior Syan Singh, sophomore Youssef Sarhan and freshmen Aly Ezzat and Edward Thng will represent the Big Red in the annual tournament.

Singh enters the weekend as Cornell's most experienced player in the individual championship format. The junior made a memorable run as a freshman during the 2023-24 season, sweeping through the Molloy North bracket with a perfect 4-0 record to earn Second Team All-American honors.

After defeating Navy's Matthew Wang in four games and sweeping Columbia's Harold Castiaux in the quarterfinals, Singh found himself in two consecutive five-game battles. In both the semifinals against Rochester's AbdelRahman Lasheen and the championship match against St. Lawrence's Lewis Anderson, Singh jumped out to commanding 2-0 leads before having to close out decisive fifth games.

This season, Singh has posted a 5-2 record overall, including an impressive 4-1 mark in matches played at the No. 1 position. Though his four-match win streak was snapped last Sunday at Harvard in a four-game loss to David Costales, Singh will look to recapture that form when he faces Drexel's Luhann Groenewald in Friday's Round of 64 at 4:10 p.m. on Court No. 3. A victory would pit him against sixth-seeded Hollis Robertson of Princeton in the Round of 32 at 8 p.m. on Court No. 5.

Sarhan has compiled a solid 5-3 record this season, including a 3-1 mark in matches at the No. 2 position. The sophomore has alternated results in his last four matches and will face Tufts' Santiago Medina in the opening round at 2:30 p.m. on Court No. 2. The winner advances to face top-seeded Tad Carney of Yale in the Round of 32 at 7 p.m. on Court No. 1.

Ezzat, one of Cornell's two freshman representatives, enters the tournament with a 4-5 record, including a 1-2 mark at No. 2 and 3-3 at No. 3. The first-year player has faced tough competition down the stretch, dropping his last four matches, all of which have gone to either four or five games. Ezzat will take on Princeton's Aly Ibrahim at 3:20 p.m. on Court No. 6, with the winner moving on to face either Colby's Hamza Wessam or Harvard's Denis Gilveskiy in the Round of 32 at 8 p.m. on Court No. 3.

Thng, Cornell's other freshman entry, carries a 4-5 record into the weekend with varied experience across multiple positions (0-2 at No. 3, 3-3 at No. 4, and 0-1 at No. 5). Like Ezzat, Thng has dropped his last four matches with three coming in straight games.

The first-year will have an opportunity for redemption when he faces Virginia's John Paul Tew at 4:10 p.m. on Court No. 6. The two met earlier this season on Dec. 6 when Cornell traveled to Charlottesville, with Tew claiming a straight-games victory, 12-10, 11-5, 11-5, at the No. 3 position. The winner advances to meet either Colby's Seif Ashraf or Princeton's Avi Agarwal in the Round of 32 at 8 p.m. on Court No. 8.
