ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Denver Polo Club scored four consecutive second-chukker goals that proved to be the difference in a 14-10 victory over Cornell women's polo on Saturday evening at Newman Arena. The Big Red dropped its first contest of the spring semester and slipped to 9-3 overall.
Facing a Cornell alumni team of men's players, the Big Red women had the game tied 3-3 entering the second chukker before finding itself down 7-4 at the half. The teams traded goals in the third and fourth, briefly getting within 11-9 before a late two-pointer by Jef Embow '01 put the game away for Denver.
"Despite the narrow defeat, I am really thrilled with how our women played," said
Anthony Condo Jr., the Peter B. Orthwein `68 Head Coach of Polo. "This was a decidedly different style of game than we would usually play, and it allowed us to work on some things as we prepare for nationals in about three weeks. This was a valuable experience for our team."
Samantha Iahn scored six goals and
Lara Chong had three, with
Naomi Marlough posting one. Embow scored nine goals for the DPC, with Jeff Markle '05 adding three. Will Yang '06 also saw action for the visitors.
Cornell closes out the regular season when it faces Marlan Farm on Friday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at Oxley Equestrian Center.
