ITHACA, N.Y. — Competing at home for the only time this season, the Cornell men's outdoor track and field team turned in a strong, well-rounded performance Sunday on day two of the Big Red Invitational at Kane Sports Complex.
On a cloudy, breezy afternoon, the Big Red leaned on both depth and standout individual efforts to close the meet on a high note.
The distance group set the tone early in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, where Colin Martens led a quartet of Cornell scorers with a first-place finish in 6:08.99. Brandon Gent (6:16.47), Andrew Ordway (6:19.62) and Benjamin Gibson (6:27.08) followed in third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Matthew O'Brien added another distance victory in the 1,500 meters, crossing first in 3:52.48, while Ryan Johnson placed third (4:00.23) and Hunter Celkupa took eighth (4:01.76).
In the hurdles, Ryder King and Teddy Rauchway paced Cornell in the 110m hurdles, finishing second (13.87) and third (14.64). King returned later in the day to claim the 400m hurdles title in 52.07, with Jason Meza finishing runner-up in 53.33.
"Ryder King had a big day, running a very strong wind-aided 13.87 in the 110 hurdles, then coming back to win the 400 hurdles in 52.0," head coach Adrian Durant said.
On the sprint side, Panashe Nhenga delivered a standout double. He placed second in the 100m dash in 10.32 before returning to win the 200m dash in a personal-best 21.28, moving into the program's all-time top 10. Mamadou Diallo added a seventh-place finish in the 100m (10.77), while Garrett Brennan (21.89) and Seamus Finn (22.19) contributed in the 200m.
"Panashe Nhenga was sharp as well, running a wind-aided 10.32 in the 100 and then a lifetime best of 21.28 in the 200, which moves him to No. 10 all-time at Cornell," Durant said.
Cornell's depth was on full display in the 400m, where the Big Red swept places two through six. Edgar Thielens led the group in second (48.88), followed by Seamus Finn (49.05), Garrett Brennan (49.25), Neil Chowdhurry (49.38) and Adam Kaufman (49.59).
The middle distance crew continued the momentum in the 800m, where Tyler Tisinger led a 1-2-3 finish in 1:53.40. Finn Boyle (1:54.92) and Asher Patel (1:55.10) followed, while Johnson (1:59.67) and Celkupa (1:59.82) added sixth- and seventh-place finishes.
In the field events, Cornell produced multiple event winners and podium sweeps.
Joe Seib led the charge in the throws, winning the invitational shot put with an outdoor personal-best throw of 17.79m, while Peter Northrup (17.71m) and Noah Harman (17.30m) placed second and fourth. Nicholas Frattina added a fifth-place finish (15.91m). Seib later captured the invitational discus title with a throw of 49.93m, and Brandon Dunn placed fifth (44.10m).
Nicholas Frattina, aka "Nick the Brick," had a standout day, setting a personal best for the first time in two years. Associate head coach, Kevin Phipps, noted "It means a lot to see a kid like Nick PR after two years. It shows that hard work really pays off, I'm proud of him."
Joseph Rachiele added a victory in the javelin throw (51.57m), while Ryan Brynjolfson placed seventh (40.27m). In the hammer, Peter Northrup finished third in the invitational section (58.63m), and Aidan Kerr won the open division with a throw of 50.91m.
In the horizontal jumps, Stepan Matura led the Big Red in the long jump with a third-place mark of 6.89m, followed by Desmond Whitley (fourth, 6.68m), Kameron Coleman (fifth, 6.53m) and Josh Kwaye Minott (seventh, 6.47m).
Kegan Mancabelli paced Cornell in the pole vault with a second-place clearance of 4.85m. Zachary Davidson (4.60m) and Wyatt Ricketts (4.15m) finished sixth and eighth, respectively.
"Despite temps in the 50s for most of the day, we had some excellent performances," head coach Adrian Durant said. "Overall, a lot of strong performances for a low-key Sunday meet here in Ithaca."
The Big Red return to action this weekend, April 17-18 at the Navy Invite in Annapolis, MD.
