ITHACA, N.Y. -- Samantha Weiner scored her first collegiate goal and
Jen Case and
Jodi Palmer combined for five saves in goal, but the Cornell women's soccer team dropped its season finale to Columbia, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon at Berman Field.
Weiner scored her first career goal in the 40th minute to bring the Big Red back level with the Lions, 1-1. Wiener one-touched a cross from
Cristina Law past Columbia goalkeeper Allison Vespa to knot the game.
Columbia took the lead in the 16th minute when Liz deBerardinis received a cross from Gudrun Finnsdottir and placed a low shot into the bottom corner of the goal past starter
Jen Case. Case would pick up one save in the first half for the Big Red.
Just 37 seconds after Weiner's strike tied the game, the Lions went ahead for good as Ashley Mistele fired a shot from in front of the goal past Case. Mistele's tally wound up being the eventual game-winner.
Despite the three goals in the first half, the second half held better chances for both teams. Cornell controlled possession for much of the second frame, but could not solve Vespa, who picked up four saves in the second half and wound up with seven for the contest.

Saturday's game was Senior Day for Cornell's seven member class of 2008.
