ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell freshman goalkeeper Jodi Palmer made a pair of saves as the Big Red defeated Siena in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Friday night at Berman Field, 3-0.
Cornell (2-3) jumped out to the lead just 2:20 into the game as freshman Lena Russomagno stripped Siena (1-3) goalkeeper Patti Carroll 12 yards from the goal and slotted the ball into the open net for her second goal in as many games. Just 12 minutes later, sophomore Lauren Lynn tallied her first collegiate points with a rocket shot from 25 yards out after taking a drop pass from Mariye Wick.
The Big Red went into the half up, 2-0, and got the first 13 minutes of the second half in before a 60-minute lightning delay forced the two sides to seek shelter. When play resumed at 9:15, the Big Red settled in and fought off waves of Siena attacks to preserve the shutout.
Cornell got an insurance goal with just over 11 minutes to play as Kara Lewis took a pass from Russomagno on the right wing. Lewis turned and fired a shot past Caroll and into the left side of the net, giving the Big Red the final 3-0 margin.
Carroll made three saves for the Saints, while Palmer stopped two shots - one in each half - for the shutout. The two teams were even with 14 shots apiece, though six of those for Siena came in the second half, compared to just three for Cornell.
Cornell will look to get back to the .500 mark for the season on Sunday when the Big Red plays host to Lafayette in a noon contest at Berman Field.
