BURLINGTON, Vt.—The Big Red women's hockey team defeated Vermont, 7-1, in its regular season opener on Friday night. Cornell's power play unit scored six goals in the win. Sophomore Rebecca Johnston led the Big Red with a goal and three assists, and junior Jenny Niesluchowski picked up the win in net making 20 saves.
Junior transfer Stephanie Holmes put Cornell on the board at 5:55 of the first period, scoring her first goal in a Big Red jersey. Johnston and freshman defenseman Amanda Young picked up the assists on the power-play tally.
Johnston put the Big Red up by two at 16:04 of the same period, netting a power-play goal with Young earning her second assist of the night.
Junior Liz Zorn scored Cornell's third power-play goal at 9:11 of the second period, with Karlee Overguard and Jess Martino helping set up the play. Freshman Catherine White and junior Laura Danforth each scored before the period was over to give Cornell a 5-0 advantage heading into the third period.
At 2:15 of the third period, sophomore defenseman Sam Wauer shot the puck past Caitlin Whitlock, who took over in net for Vermont in the third. Johnston and Young assisted on the goal.
Vermont scored its lone goal at 6:55 of the third off the stick of Shannon Bellefeuile.
A little over a minute later, Zorn netted her second goal of the night on the power play to bring the game to a final, 7-1 score.
Kristin Olychuck took the loss for Vermont making 15 saves, and Whitlock totaled 18.
The Big Red was 6-for-15 on the power play, while the Catamounts were 0-12. Cornell outshot Vermont, 40-21.
The two teams will face off again on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. start.
