PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Cornell University field hockey team defeated Brown, 4-2, this afternoon on Warner Roof in Providence, R.I. With the win, the Big Red tied the school record for overall wins and Ivy League wins, improving to 10-4 overall and 5-0 in the conference and setting up a battle of Ivy unbeatens next weekend when it welcomes No. 12 Princeton to Marsha Dodson Field on Saturday, Nov. 1 at noon.
The Big Red outshot Brown, 20-11, but the Bears held the slight 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Cornell goalie
Melanie Jue needed to make just one save to earn the win, while Caroline Washburn kept the Bears in the game with 11 saves.
It took less than three minutes for Cornell to get onto the board as Sanders collected a rebound off a shot by
Belen Martinez and knocked it past Washburn to put the Big Red up, 1-0.
Brown knotted the game at 1-1 at the 21:42 mark when Katie Hyland converted a penalty corner.
Cornell managed to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission when Kantarian sent a pass cross crease to De Stio, whose shot from the right side beat Washburn far corner.
Kantarian then scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 50th minute when she scored off a pass from Prodanovic.
Less than four minutes later, the Bears cut the Big Red lead back to one goal when Tacy Zysk scored off a penalty corner.
Following the goal, Brown turned up the offensive pressure and outshot Cornell, 6-0, and earned four penalty corners in a span of nine minutes but the Bears were unable to net the equalizer.
Cornell got a late insurance goal when Kantarian notched her second goal of the game off an
Abbi Horn rebound with 42 seconds remaining to account for the 4-2 final.
