HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Colin Greening had a goal and an assist and Ben Scrivens made 40 saves as the Cornell men's hockey team picked up a 4-1 victory at Colgate on Thursday night at Starr Rink in Hamilton, N.Y. Scrivens also set a Cornell record for the longest shutout streak in history, topping out at 206:44 before the Raiders snapped his scoreless string.

Evan Barlow added a pair of assists for the Big Red (2-0-1, 2-0-1 ECAC Hockey) as the Cornell power play unit came to life. After going 0-for-13 on the man advantage last weekend at Princeton and Quinnipiac, the Big Red tallied its first two goals on the man advantage and finished the night 3-for-6 on the power play. Cornell also was successful in ending all nine of Colgate's power play chances to run its season string to a perfect 20-for-20.

Scrivens, who entered the game with 165:45 consecutive scoreless minutes dating back to last season's ECAC Hockey consolation win over Colgate, snapped a nearly 39-year-old mark set by Brian Cropper in the 1969-70 season. That mark of 189:48 withstood challenges from goaltenders like John VanDerMark, David McKee and David LeNeveu, but it was 10 scoreless periods and an overtime for Scrivens that erased one of the oldest records in the Cornell history books.

Cornell wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard, capitalizing on an early power play opportunity. Just seconds after opening the man advantage, Riley Nash worked the puck down to the corner to Evan Barlow, who fed a centering pass to the near post, where Blake Gallagher chipped it over to Greening on the back post, and the junior co-captain calmly slotted the puck into the open backside of the goal for his first marker of the season just 1:48 into the game.

The Big Red made it 2-for-2 on the power play, capitalizing on a slashing call on Colgate's Mark Anderson. Less than a minute into the penalty, Riley Nash sent a pass across the goal mouth that went into the opposite corner, where Greening fished it out and slipped a pass back to Jordan Berk at the point. Berk skated in to the top of the faceoff circle to Long's left and ripped off a wrister that beat the junior netminder high to the stick side, putting the Big Red ahead 2-0 just seven and a half minutes in.

The Colgate power play, which entered the game with seven power-play goals in 33 chances, got its first opportunity with 2:48 to play when Berk was called for a trip. The Cornell penalty killers kept Colgate from setting up in the offensive zone for the first full minute of the power play before getting set up. With 36 seconds left on the power play, Tyler Mugford was called for a high-sticking penalty, with matching hitting from behind minors to Cornell's Taylor Davenport and Colgate's David St. Pierre, to give the Raiders a 5-on-3 with 1:24 to play in the first period. The Raiders won the draw and got set up, but could not get a shot through the Cornell penalty killers, ending the penalty on Berk. Cornell was then able to close out the period without allowing a shot, taking a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Colgate opened the period with 36 seconds left on the penalty to Mugford, but Scrivens stopped the only Colgate attempt before the Big Red went back to full strength. That lasted just 40 seconds before Mike Devin was called for interference at the 1:04 mark of the second period. Colgate's McIntyre got a shot off that Scrivens batted back in between the circles that the Raiders' Jason Williams chipped toward the crossbar, but Scrivens made an acrobatic diving stop to bat the puck away into the corner. After Cornell cleared the puck into the Colgate zone, Evan Barlow was hooked down by St. Pierre, evening up the teams at four skaters apiece at the 1:58 mark of the period. As the Big Red got its side back to full strength, the clock ticked away on the penatly to St. Pierre and away into the history books as the longest shutout streak in Cornell history.

Colgate got its third power play chance on a holding call on Seminoff just under five minutes into the period. Midway through the penalty, Scrivens, battling Colgate's Peter Bogdanich for position in front of the goal, dragged the Raider player to the ice, resulting in matching minors, a hold on Scrivens and a goaltender interference penalty on Bogdanich. Cornell was able to kill the remaining penalty without incident.

Shortly afterward, the Big Red made the score 3-0 when Locke Jillson worked the puck from behind the net to Barlow, who slipped it to Mugford, standing alone in front of the crease. The senior calmly stepped aside Long's stick and shoveled the puck into the top half of the goal for his second strike of the season.

With 2:15 to play in the second period, a line change resulted in six Cornell players on the ice, giving Colgate another power play chance. That ended when the Raiders were called for a hooking call, putting the two teams at 4-on-4. The 4-on-4 lasted for just 29 seconds until Justin Krueger was called for a hold, giving a 4-on-3 for nine seconds. Michael Kennedy won the ensuing draw as Cornell cleared the puck out of the zone, and the period ended with the two teams at 4-on-4.

Scrivens' shutout streak came to an end just 59 seconds into the third period as a scrum in front of the Cornell goal led to the Raiders' Brian Day chipping in the loose puck off an assist from David McIntyre.

A tripping call on Colgate's St. Pierre gave the Big Red a power play at the 13:56 mark of the third period, and the Big Red wasted no time in capitalizing, as Michael Kennedy ripped a shot to the top right corner of the goal, ending Long's night in favor of Alex Evin.

A holding call on Tyler Roeszler gave the Raiders their ninth power play of the night, but again the Big Red were able to kill off the penalty to keep the season penalty-kiling percentage a perfect 100.0.

Scrivens finished the night with 40 saves on 41 shots, while Charles Long had 12 saves on 16 shots. His replacement, Alex Evin, stopped both shots he faced in 5:51 of action.

Cornell will return home to Ithaca and will face Colgate again in the home opener on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink. For ticket information for Saturday's game, call the Big Red Athletic Ticket Office at 607-254-BEAR.

Post-Game Notes

Scrivens' shutout streak fell just shy of breaking Colgate's Mark Dekanich for the ECAC Hockey record, set at 217:16 last season... the NCAA record for shutout minutes is 375:01, held by Lake Superior State's Blaine Lacher in 1994... Greening's two points against Colgate on Thursday night raise his career point total against the Raiders to six points in six games, the highest point total of any current Big Red player. Evan Barlow is next with five points in seven career games.
