Six minutes into the game, Cornell was in Niagara's zone with the Big Red forwards setting up a play from behind the net of the Purple Eagles' Jenni Bauer. Sophomore
Rebecca Johnston fed the puck to freshman
Catherine White, who made a quick pass to Martino on the left point. Martino let a big slap shot go and scored her second goal of the season at 6:01 of the first period. Johnston picked up her 49th career point with the assist.
Niagara had its first power-play opportunity at 11:39 of the first period off a Cornell interference penalty. A Purple Eagles player dumped the puck in front of the Big Red goal and Melanie Mills poked it past goaltender
Kayla Strong to tie the game. Jennifer MacLean and Christina Jablonski assisted on the goal.
The Purple Eagles were on the power play again midway through the second period. Caitlin Jenkins shot at Strong's glove and the puck ricocheted off the top and into the net. Jocey Kleiber and MacLean picked up the assists.
At 3:14 of the third period, Martino took a shot from the point, and
Karlee Overguard found the rebound to tie the game at 2-2. Junior
Stephanie Holmes also assisted on the goal.
Niagara's Autumn Stuntz was awarded a penalty shot at 5:03 of the third period after she was tripped on a break-away into the Cornell zone. Stuntz tried to fake Strong on the left side, but the Cornell goaltender stood solid and stopped the shot with her left leg.
The Purple Eagles were on the power-play again a little over six minutes into the third period, when Kleiber scored what would prove to be the game-winner. Mary McKinnon and Ashley Riggs assisted on the goal.
Strong made 18 saves in net for Cornell, while Bauer notched 40.
The Big Red and Purple Eagles will play again on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Lynah Rink.
