PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Big Red women's hockey team got back to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon with a 6-0 shutout over Brown at Meehan Auditorium. Six different Cornell forwards scored, while junior Jenny Niesluchowski made 18 saves en route to her second shutout of the season. Freshman Catherine White's game-winning goal helped the Big Red to improve to 10-9-2 overall this season and 6-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play. The Bears fell to 3-16-1 and are 2-11 in league action.
White notched her second goal of the weekend at 2:37 of the first period to give the Big Red a quick lead that it would never relinquish. Freshman defender Amanda Young picked up the assist.
The Big Red was hit by a tripping penalty at 3:36 of the first period. Brown's Sasha Van Muyen put play at four-on-four after taking a tripping penalty of her own at 4:56. Cornell went on the power play at 5:36, and three seconds later sophomore Karlee Overguard scored unassisted to put the Big Red up, 2-0.
Freshman Kendice Ogilvie notched her first goal in a Big Red jersey at 10:29 of the first to give Cornell a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission. Young and Brianne Gilbert picked up the assists. Cornell outshot Brown 19-3 in the first period.
The Cornell offense continued its strong play in the second period, but the Bears' goaltender Nicole Stock held firm for the first 10 minutes. The Big Red took advantage of a Brown line change and used a three-on-one opportunity to lengthen its lead to 4-0. Freshman Chelsea Karpenko notched her seventh goal of the season at 12:37, with sophomore Rebecca Johnston earning the helper. Cornell held an 18-9 advantage in shots in the second.
Senior Emma Chipman recorded her first goal of the season at 9:02 of the third period to put the score at 5-0 in favor of the Big Red. Gilbert and Overguard assisted on the goal.
Only 47 seconds had ticked off the clock before Johnston scored Cornell's sixth and final goal of the game. White and sophomore defenseman Sam Wauer earned the assists.
Niesluchowski had 18 saves in her fifth career shutout, while Stock took the loss stopping 43 of the Big Red's shots. Cornell was 1-4 on the power play, while Brown was 0-5.
Overguard was close to perfect on face offs winning 17 of 21, while White won 17 of 28. Young was +4 for the night, while Wauer and White were both +3.
The Big Red will return home next weekend to play host to St. Lawrence and Clarkson. Cornell will take on the Saints on Friday, Jan. 30 for a 7 p.m. game, and will face off against the Golden Knights on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
