ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell men's basketball team hit its first eight shots and set a school record 18 3-pointers in overwhelming Division III Ursinus 99-45 on Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena. The Big Red remained unbeaten at home (5-0) and improved to 8-6 with the victory, while the Bears, ranked No. 13 in Division III, dropped to 6-3.
Ryan Wittman scored 19 points, all coming in the first half, and freshman
Alex Hill tallied a career-high 18 to lead Cornell, which shot 59 percent from the field in the win.
Pete Reynolds added 10 points and
Louis Dale also chipped in with 10 as all 16 players saw action and 14 reached the scoring column for the defending Ivy League champions.
The Big Red connected on 18 3-pointers and surpassed the previous mark of 15 set against Syracuse in 2004. Hill hit six of the shots from beyond the arc and Wittman nailed five to lead the charge. The duo combined to go 11-of-16.
Remy Cousart had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds to lead Ursinus, while John Noonan added 10. The Bears shot 28 percent from the floor and 21 percent from beyond the arc. The win was the 18th straight by Cornell over non-Division I foes.
Cornell jumped out to a 23-7 edge by making its first eight shots of the game, including six from beyond the arc. The Bears watched as the home team hit 14 first-half 3-pointers, one shy of the school record of 15 for a game. The 65 points Cornell scored in the first half was also a record as the Big Red shot 73 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes and 74 percent from 3-point range.
It became apparent quite early that it would be Cornell's night. The first half started with a 3-pointer by Wittman, a jumper by Tyler, a free throw by Wittman, and five straight 3-pointers on the team's first eight possessions. When Wittman hit another pull-up with 15:38 left, the score was 23-7. It wouldn;t get any better for the visitors representing Cornell head coach Steve Donahue's alma mater, as another 18-2 run put the game far out of reach, making it 48-15 on a layup by
Jon Jaques with 4:44 left. Hill responded to that Cornell run by connecting on 3-pointers on four of the team's next five possessions to push the advantage to 38 (63-25), while
Andre Wilkins hit a layup with four seconds remaining before halftime to set a school record for points in a half, sending the home team to the locker room up 65-25.
Wittman hit 5-of-6 shots from the floor in his 13 minutes of action as three players hit for double figures in the first half. Dale added 10 points and five assists, while Hill hit five consecutive 3-pointers in the final six minutes of the half for a career-best 15 points. As a team, the Big Red assisted on 18 baskets and had just five turnovers while limiting the Bears to 30 percent from the floor with 10 turnovers.
The second half gave the Big Red reserves a chance to shine. Senior captain
Conor Mullen contributed eight points, three rebounds and two assists, while Reynolds posted eight points, three rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. Though he didn't score,
Marc Van Burck blocked three shots, and
Andre Wilkins added four points and four rebounds in the second half. While the team's scoring slowed, the defense remained consistent, allowing the Bears to shoot just 26 percent from the floor while missing all five shots from beyond the arc. Coming into the game, Ursinus was shooting 51 percent from the field as a team.
The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 6, when it meets Bucknell at 7 p.m. at Newman Arena.

* Cornell's 18 3-pointers surpassed the previous record of 15 set against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Dec. 20, 2004.
* The Big Red's 34 attempts from beyond the arc was also a single-game high, more than the 31 put up against Ithaca College on Dec. 3, 2001.
* The 65 first half points broke a record for points in a half previously set against Colgate when Cornell put up 62 points on Dec. 4, 1965.
* The 99 points is the most in a game under head coach Steve Donahue and is the most by a Big Red team since going for 108 points in a 108-87 triumph at Harvard on March 6, 1993.
