Women’s Basketball Falls to Miami

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Cornell women's basketball team fell to Miami, 101-62, this evening at Newman Arena. In the Big Red's final game before a short holiday break, the team was outmatched by a physical Hurricane squad that used 14 steals to score 30 points off Cornell turnovers.

Cornell (5-4) was led by its seniors as Lauren Benson scored 17 points, while Virginia McMunigal and Allie Fedorowicz chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Big Red had four players – Clare Fitzpatrick, Allie Munson, Kristina Danielak, and Christine Vlasic – grab a team-high five rebounds.

Miami (9-1) was led by Shenise Johnson with 27 points and Riquna Williams with 24. Also scoring in double figures were Shanel Williams (13) and Diane Barnes (11). Williams posted an untraditional double-double, as she added a game-high 10 assists. Sylvia Bullock had a game-high eight rebounds, helping the Hurricanes to a 45-34 advantage on the boards.

Cornell had a solid night shooting, connecting on 41.2 percent from the floor (21-of-51) and an impressive 61.5 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-13), but was done in by 26 turnovers.

The Hurricanes converted 50 percent (40-of-80) of its shots from the floor and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) of its 3-point attempts.

The Big Red is back in action next week as it travels to the Virginia Holiday Tournament, where it will face Liberty in the opening round on Monday, Dec. 28 at 4:30 p.m. The Big Red will face either the host Cavaliers or Samford the following day, Tuesday, Dec. 29. The consolation game will be played at 4:30 p.m., with the championship game taking place at 7 p.m.
