ITHACA, N.Y. -- Facing elimination against an underdog Rensselaer squad, the Cornell men's hockey team peppered the RPI goal with 56 shots en route to a 4-0 victory over the Engineers in an ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal game on Saturday night at Lynah Rink. The win means the two teams will square off on Sunday night in a deciding game three, also to be played at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink. Evan Barlow scored twice to lead the Big Red, while Riley Nash and Colin Greening both added a goal on the night.

With Cornell putting the offensive pressure on Rensselaer goaltender Allen York, who made 40 saves in the first two periods before being lifted at the start of the third period, the Engineers could only mount nine shots on the Cornell goal, with goalie Ben Scrivens turning away all nine for his seventh shutout of the season. The last time Cornell allowed single-digit shot totals came on Oct. 29, 2004, in a 7-1 victory over Army. In that game, David McKee stopped six shots with Troy Davenport stopping two in the final 10 minutes of action. The last time Cornell allowed fewer than 10 shots in a shutout came on Feb. 7, 2004, allowing nine shots in a 1-0 victory over Vermont.

While Cornell was busy putting shot after shot on the Rensselaer goal, the Engineers were trying to stay out of the penalty box, as RPI was whistled for 19 penalties on the night, totalling 41 minutes. Cornell was called for nine penalties for 18 minutes, a night after Cornell coach Mike Schafer's post-game comments regarding the officiating in game one resulted in a one-game suspension from the league. Schafer was not behind the bench for the victory, with associate head coach Casey Jones and assistant coach Scott Garrow directing the Big Red.

Cornell finished the game 2-for-18 on the power play, while Rensselaer was 0-for-5 on the man advantage. Scrivens finished with nine saves, while York made 40 stops in 40 minutes of action. Mathias Lange finished the game for the Engineers and stopped 12 of the 13 shots he faced in the third period.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday night at 7 p.m. for the right to advance to the ECAC Hockey semifinals next weekend in Albany, N.Y.
