MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's got three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the score at six and ultimately scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Cornell baseball team dropped a 7-6 contest to the Gaels on Wednesday afternoon in Moraga, Calif.
Nathan Ford went 3-for-5 for the Big Red on the day, while
Adam Jacobs picked up two hits in five at bats to lead the Cornell offense.
Nate David scored twice, with Ford driving in a pair of runs.
Mickey Brodsky worked six strong innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out three.
Saint Mary's got the early lead, scoring in the bottom of the first off Brodsky, but the sophomore settled in and kept the Gaels off the board as Cornell tied the game in the third inning and took a 3-1 lead in the fourth. In the third, the Big Red used a walk, a single and a hit batsman to load the bases, and an error on the shortstop allowed
Scott Hardinger to score to tie the bases on a ball hit by
Jadd Schmeltzer.
Cornell took the lead with two runs in the fourth with Hardinger driving in
Casey Brett and
Nathan Ford singling home David as Cornell went on top. Saint Mary's regained the lead in the fifth inning, though, as a solo home run and a two-run double made the score 4-3 in favor of the Gaels.
Cornell got the lead right back with another pair of runs in the top of the sixth. David led off with a walk and scored when
Domenic Di Ricco reached on an error, with Di Ricco later scoring on Ford's sacrifice fly to right to put the Big Red back on top, 5-4. Cornell added to the lead in the seventh as
Matt Langseth doubled and scored on Jacobs' single to left-center to make the score 6-4.
Saint Mary's tied things up in the eighth, stringing together four straight singles to knot the game at six. Cornell left the bases loaded in the ninth, with
David Rochefort retiring the side in the bottom half of the inning. In the 10th, Hardinger was left stranded at third, which would cost the Big Red as back-to-back singles and a wild pitch scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
Cornell returns to action on Thursday, opening up a four-game set against Sacramento State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Pacific time.
