ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell will attempt to send a shock through the women's lacrosse world when it faces No. 3 Penn on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at Franklin Field. The Big Red (5-1, 1-0 Ivy) will face a Quaker team (6-0, 1-0 Ivy) that advanced to the national championship game a season ago and has won 16 consecutive conference games.
Cornell will have to shut its last game out of its mind after dropping a 16-9 decision to No. 20 Loyola (Md.) on Wednesday in its first of five straight games against teams ranked in the top 20.
The Quakers have already played an outstanding schedule and got through it unscathed, knocking off teams like North Carolina (11-2), Boston University (13-7) and Penn State (9-6). Penn's defense is allowing just 3.8 goals per game, with goalkeeper Emily Szelest posting a strong 4.00 goals against average and a .532 save percentage. As a team, the defending Ivy League champions are averaging 9.5 caused turnovers per game. Courtney Lubbe leads the team in scoring with 14 goals and nine assists.
Last year's game was an epic, as No. 6 Penn used a dominant second half to overcome a deficit at the break and held off the Big Red 7-6. Six different players scored goals for Cornell, with Courtney Farrell leading the way with a goal and an assist. Penn did Cornell one better, as all seven goals were posted by a different Quaker. Five different players had a goal and an assist, with goalkeeper Sarah Waxman backing them up with six saves.
