Softball Captures Ivy South Division Crown with Two Wins Over Columbia

NEW YORK, N.Y.—
The Big Red softball team secured its win of the Ivy League South Division on Sunday afternoon with two victories at Columbia. Cornell won the first game, 8-0 in five innings, and followed with a 14-2 six-inning victory in game two. With four games left in Ivy play, the Big Red sits five wins in front of second place Princeton to win the South title.

Senior Jessy Berkey had two home runs for the day to drive in a team-high six RBI. Berkey was 4-for-7 at the plate. Junior Ashley Garvey went 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI. Meg Risica and Elise Menaker also had long balls for the Big Red. Sophomore Elizabeth Dalrymple earned the win in game one, shutting out Columbia and only allowing two hits. Classmate Ali Tomlinson struck out nine batters to pick up the win in game two. Tomlinson also went 2-for-6 at the plate for the day with three RBI.

Columbia was led by Dani Pineda who had two RBI and a home run. Lechler, Maggie Johnson and Jackie Ecker each notched a hit for the Lions. Johnson took the loss in game one, while Erica Clauss was the pitcher of record in game two.

In game one, Menaker, Garvey and Risica each notched a homer. Dalrymple moves to 15-3 overall this season with the win and struck out three batters.

Intihar reached on a Columbia throwing error to open the first game and advanced to second on a sac bunt by March. Menaker was hit by a pitch before Garvey homered to centerfield to give the Big Red a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the third, March singled through the left side, and Menaker reached on a fielder's choice. Menaker stole second and Risica was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Berkey doubled down the right field line to drive in two more runs.

Menaker led off the fifth inning with a solo home run to left field. Garvey reached base on a Lions' error and senior Jaime Tupino came in to run. Risica homered to right center to give Cornell its final 8-0 lead.

The Lions' took its first lead of the day in the bottom of the first inning in game two. Keli Leong reached base on a Cornell error and scored an unearned run off a double by Pineda.

The Big Red quickly tied the game at one all in the top of the second, when Berkey led off with a homer over the right field fence.

Pineda hit a solo homer in the top of the third to give her team back the lead.

The Big Red bats came alive in the top of the fourth inning. Berkey reached base on a Columbia error and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Tomlinson. Vanessa Leonhard singled up the middle to drive in Berkey and advanced to second on the throw. Katie Watts came in to run for Leonhard, and was driven home by a double to left center by Intihar. March singled through the left side to drive in another run for Cornell and give her team a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Garvey led off with a double to right center, and Cawley came in to run for Cornell. Cawley advanced to third on a passed ball, and Risica walked. Berkey drove in three more runs with her second home run of the game. Tomlinson singled through the left side and Amiraian pinch ran. Amiraian advanced to third on a Columbia error and scored on a wild pitch.

Garvey walked to lead off the sixth inning, and Risica singled through the left side. Berkey singled to right field to load the bases. Tomlinson doubled to right center to drive in three more runs for Cornell. Leonhard singled to centerfield to put Tomlinson on third. Intihar doubled to left to drive in two more runs. Tupino pinch hit and singled to center. Garvey singled to second base to drive in Cornell's last run to give the Big Red a 14-2 lead.

The Big Red held off Columbia in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

The Big Red will play host to Ithaca for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m.
