Cornell has won four of its last five games, to guarantee a winning season, but its signature win came on Tuesday with a dominant 11-4 triumph over No. 10 Vanderbilt. Despite playing without the services of junior
Kate Dewey and freshman
Jessi Steinberg on the attack, Cornell was ableto score on 11 of its 21 shots and limited the powerful Commodore offense to just 12 shots the entire game. Defensively, the home team held Vanderbilt to a season-low four goals, nearly 12 below its season average, while causing 13 turnovers. The Big Red has allowed its last five opponents just 6.6 goals per game despite playing three of those contests against teams ranked among the top 10 in scoring (Syracuse, New Hampshire and Vanderbilt).
Harvard holds a commanding 19-10 lead in the all-time series, but Cornell has dominated the recent past. After the Crimson took the first 19 games between the teams, the Big Red has won every contest fot the last decade, including a 12-9 decision last season in Cambridge, Mass. to claim a second-place Ancient Eight finish.
SCOUTING HARVARD: After dropping an 11-10 decision to Columbia last Saturday, Harvard enters its Ivy League finale sporting a 4-10 record (1-5 Ivy) with the high-scoring duo of Kaitlin Martin (35 goals, 12 assists) and Jess Halpern (40 goals, eight assists). The all-around play of Tyler Petropulos (21 goals, five assists, 30 draw controls, 28 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers) and Sara Flood (17 goals, 14 assists, 30 draw controls, 13 ground balls) have also been key for the Crimson. In goal, Kerry Clark has posted a 12.95 goals against average and a .380 save percentage while starting all 14 contests. Head coach Lisa Miller is no stranger to the Schoellkopf Field sidelines, having directed Syracuse to a 106-53 mark before taking over the Harvard program in 2008. She is 13-17 in two years with the Crimson for an overall college coaching mark of 119-70.
THE SERIES: Harvard leads the all-time series 19-10, though the Big Red has won each of the last 10 contests after the Crimson took the first 19 games between the teams. Cornell has won the last three games by a 46-25 margin, including a 12-9 victory a season ago in Cambridge, Mass., behind four goals by
Kate Dewey.
WINNING IVY SEASON: Cornell needs to win its final Ancient Eight contest against Harvard to close out the campaign with a winning conference record. The Big Red has finished above .500 in league play seven times in the last nine years after never posting more than three conference victories prior to head coach
Jenny Graap taking over in 1998.
OFF THE BOARD: The Big Red's recent resurgence can be directly attributed to its outstanding play on the defensive end as Cornell has gone 4-1 in its last five games. Cornell limited a Vanderbilt team that was averaging 15.8 goals per game and had scored in double figures in every contest to four tallies in an 11-4 victory on Tuesday. Prior to that, the Big Red held a New Hampshire team posting 13.0 goals per game to just three in a 5-3 win, and limited a Syracuse offense averaging 15.2 goals to 11 in an 11-8 defeat at the hands of the Orange. All three of those teams were nationally ranked.
COMMANDING THE COMMODORES: Not only was Vanderbilt's four goals in an 11-4 defeat its fewest scores in a game this year (10 vs. defending national champion and current No. 1 Northwestern), but it was the fewest the 10th-ranked Commodores had scored in a game against an opponent other than the Wildcats since an 11-3 loss at Princeton in the 2004 NCAA semifinals.
REESE EARNS DIVISION I DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (APRIL 14): Kristen Reese was named the Division I Defense Player of the Week by womenslacrosse.com today after leading the Big Red to victories over No. 19 New Hampshire and Brown. Reese posted a 6.00 goals against average, a .647 save percentage and chipped in seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. She ended the week with 22 saves and just 12 goals allowed. Reese was a rock in goal in a 5-3 win at No. 19 New Hampshire, making 13 saves and allowing just three goals while winning four ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers in the finest game of her collegiate career. She responded by making all nine of her saves in the decisive second half of a 12-9 Ancient Eight victory over Brown.
REESE NAMED IVY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (MARCH 9): Reese was outstanding in the Big Red's 13-10 win at Hofstra, collecting a career-high 14 saves to stone a Pride offense averaging nearly 14 goals per outing. Reese made saves on Hofstra's first three shots to set the tone and made seven saves in each half to help the Big Red remain unbeaten.

ANNUAL DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT HELPS FIGHT AGAINST MS: On December 7, 2008, the Cornell women's lacrosse team hosted the Fourth Annual Dodgeball Tournament to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. The event was held in Cornell's indoor turf facility, the Ramin Room, and was a fun stress-reliever during fall semester study days. The tournament was a great success again this year, with 41 teams participating, representing many of the varsity athletic programs.
IVY LEAGUE TO ADD POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT IN 2010: Ivy League Executive Director Jeff Orleans announced in January that the Ivy League will begin four-team tournaments in spring 2010 to determine the Ivy League's automatic qualifying institutions to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Lacrosse Championships. The winners of the Ivy League championship will continue to be determined by results of the League's round-robin competitions. Each tournament will include the top four teams in Ivy League regular season round-robin competition and will be hosted by the round-robin winner.
