Inside Lacrosse ad IWLCA Northeast regional coach of the Year in 2006 after leading Cornell to share of first Ivy League title ... Graap is the fifth head women's lacrosse coach at Cornell and has posted the second-highest win total and has a school-record winning percentage.
THE STORY LINE VS. DARTMOUTH: After playing two of the top six teams in the country on consecutive Saturday's, this weekend's contest won't be any easier when Cornell visits No. 15 Dartmouth on Saturday, April 4 at 1 p.m. at Scully-Fahey Field. A young Big Red team will have to be up for yet another challenge as it attempts to win in Hanover, N.H. for the first time since 1984 when the two ranked teams meet fir the 30th time.
Cornell has dropped three consecutive games after opening the season with a perfect 5-0 record. Head coach
Jenny Graap's teams haven't ducked the challenges, playing six of its last eight contests against teams ranked in the top 20.
Dartmouth has turned it on since a near-miss against No. 2 Maryland, falling in overtime to the Terrapins 13-12 on March 18. Since that game, the Big Green has won three straight, including wins over Ancient Eight foes Yale and Brown to push its record to 5-3. The team's last two wins, coming at home against Fairfield and Brown, have come by a combined 33-9, with a dominant 16-1 triumph over the Bears being the highlight. Kat Collins leads the team offensively with 23 goals and seven assists for 30 points to lead five players averaging better than two points per game.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH: Dartmouth enters Saturday's contest riding high, posting three straight victories, including a pair of Ivy League tilts, as part of its 5-3 start. The Big Green has taken off since nearly upsetting No. 2 Maryland on March 18 before finally falling 13-12 in overtime. Pacing the Dartmouth offense is Kat Collins with a team-high 23 goals and 30 points, while Katherine Chiusano has 12 goals and a team-best 16 assists. Sarah Parks also has more than 20 points (17 goals, five assists), while both Greta Meyer and Sarah Plumb have played at an All-Ivy level, combining for 37 points with both posting double figures in ground balls, draw controls and caused turnovers. Defensively, Colleen Olsen has a team-high 14 caused turnovers and goalkeeper Julie Wadland is sporting a 9.18 goals against average and a .444 save percentage. The Big Green has allowed just 15 goals in its three-game win streak. Head coach Amy Patton is in her 15th season as head coach and has directed the program to eight Ivy titles, 10 NCAA tournament appearances, an NCAA runner-up finish (2006) and a 177-74 overall record.
THE SERIES: Dartmouth holds a commanding 23-6 lead in the all-time series, though it has been much closer in recent times, with Cornell winning three of the last seven contests, including last year's 10-9 Big Red deicison in Ithaca. Four of the last eight meetings have been decided by a goal. Dartmouth has won 11 straight contests between the teams in Hanover, and Cornell will be looking for its first road victory against the Big Green since taking a 12-9 victory in 1984.
IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME: How long has it been since Cornell defeated Dartmouth in Hanover in women's lacrosse? None of the team's 30 players were born yet when the Big Red picked up a 12-9 victory over the Big Green on April 21, 1984.
LAST TIME VS. THE BIG GREEN: Goalkeeper
Kristen Reese made the most of her first collegiate start, making 11 saves, including several outstanding stops, to lead Cornell past No. 20 Dartmouth 10-9 at Schoellkopf Field. Reese stoned a Kristen Barry shot on the doorstep with just under two minutes to play and deked out the Big Green's Greta Meyer with four seconds to play, allowing
Katherine Simmons to draw a charge and get the ball back for the home team to secure the victory.
STREAK OF THE WEEK: A season ago, Cornell was also on the wrong side of a long losing streak, dropping four consecutive games, all to ranked teams. How did the team respond? It went 6-2 down the stretch to finish tied for second in the Ancient Eight with its only losses to Syracuse and at Notre Dame. The losing streak ended with a 10-9 win over Dartmouth.
OFFENSE UNTRACKED: Cornell will be attempting to connect offensively after scoring just 19 goals in the last three games combined. The Big Red had reached double figures in scoring in four of its first five games during the team's 5-0 start, but has averaged just 6.3 goals in its current 0-3 streak.
TOUGH STRETCH: The Big Red is in the middle of a stretch of five straight games against ranked opponents (0-3 so far). In all, Cornell will play eight of its last 11 games against ranked squads.
REESE NAMED IVY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (MARCH 9): Reese was outstanding in the Big Red's 13-10 win at Hofstra, collecting a career-high 14 saves to stone a Pride offense averaging nearly 14 goals per outing. Reese made saves on Hofstra's first three shots to set the tone and made seven saves in each half to help the Big Red remain unbeaten.
LAFFERTY NAMED IVY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (MARCH 2): Senior co-captain
Deirdre Lafferty spearheaded a defense that surrendered a 6.47 goals against average in opening the season a perfect 2-0, earning her first Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors in the process. Lafferty posted seven caused turnovers and won four ground balls while helping Cornell clear the ball successfully 87 percent of the time in wins over defending Patriot League champion Colgate and unbeaten Rutgers (27-of-31).
McKIE EARNS SPOT ON HAUDENASAUNEE WORLD CUP TEAM: Freshman
Mia McKie has earned a position on the Haudenasaunee Nation's team that will compete in the FIL Women's World Cup in Prague from June 17-27. McKie was a five-year varsity letter winner and three-year captain at Niagara-Wheatfield HS and earned the 2007 Tewaaraton Foundation Award for the Outstanding Native High School Player.
LAFFERTY, WIEGAND NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS: Seniors
Deirdre Lafferty and
Jessica Wiegand have been elected captains of the women's lacrosse team for the 2009 season. The duo will provide senior leadership to a young team that features 13 freshmen and 19 total underclassmen.
ANNUAL DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT HELPS FIGHT AGAINST MS: On December 7, 2008, the Cornell women's lacrosse team hosted the Fourth Annual Dodgeball Tournament to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. The event was held in Cornell's indoor turf facility, the Ramin Room, and was a fun stress-reliever during fall semester study days. The tournament was a great success again this year, with 41 teams participating, representing many of the varsity athletic programs.
IVY LEAGUE TO ADD POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT IN 2010: Ivy League Executive Director Jeff Orleans announced in January that the Ivy League will begin four-team tournaments in spring 2010 to determine the Ivy League's automatic qualifying institutions to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Lacrosse Championships. The winners of the Ivy League championship will continue to be determined by results of the League's round-robin competitions. Each tournament will include the top four teams in Ivy League regular season round-robin competition and will be hosted by the round-robin winner. The men's tournament will be the season's last weekend (Friday-Sunday, May 7-9, 2010) and the women's tournament will be the preceding weekend (April 30-May 2).
