THE STORY LINE VS. BROWN: Cornell will attempt to get back in the win column in Ancient Eight play when it meets upstart Brown on Saturday, April 11 at 1 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field. Live video of the game is available as part of the RedCast subscription service, while live stats will also be provided for the game.

The Big Red defense, led by junior goalkeeper Kristen Reese, dominated a Monday afternoon contest against high-scoring New Hampshire, knocking off the 19th-ranked Wildcats by a score of 5-3. Reese made 13 saves, including six to go along with a caused turnover in the final 15 minutes, to lead the Big Red to its second victory over a ranked team this year. To show how great the defense was, the five goals are the fewest by the Big Red in a win since defeating Yale 5-2 during the 1991 campaign.

With the victory, Cornell snapped a four-game skid, with all of the losses coming to teams ranked in the top 20. Now the Big Red will attempt to respond to its losing streak the same way it did a season ago when it dropped four consecutive before recovering to win six of its last eight contests.

Cornell has dominated the series in recent years (nine straight victories, including three straight by at least eight goals) to take a narrow 15-14 edge all-time. The Big Red won last year's meeting 17-9 in Providence, R.I.

SCOUTING BROWN: Brown enters the weekend with a 6-4 record after drilling Bryant 21-6 on Tuesday. The Bears are also 2-1 in Ivy League play with wins over Harvard and Columbia. Brown has used a balanced offense that has seen six players reach double figures in scoring and a seventh with nine points, led by Katelyn Caro with 23 goals and 26 points. Molly McCarthy has quarterbacked the offense with a team-best 13 assists. All-Ivy candidate Lauren Vitkus has 12 goals and 14 total points, while also leading the team in ground balls (21) and draw controls (19). Kiki Manners paces the Bears in caused turnovers (14), as Brown has nearly doubled its opponents in caused turnovers so far this year (100-55). Head coach Keely McDonald is in her fifth season directing her alma mater.

THE SERIES: Cornell leads the all-time series 15-14, including winning the last nine meetings between the teams. The Big Red won last year's contest, 17-9, and has now won the last three meetings by at least eight goals. In Ithaca, Cornell sports a 7-6 all-time record against the Bears.

LAST TIME VS. THE BEARS: Senior Katherine Simmons matched classmate Courtney Farrell's NCAA record for fastest goal to start a game as part of a 7-0 Big Red explosion in a 17-9 win over Brown on April 11, 2008, at Stevenson Field. Simmons scored just eight seconds into the game, matching Farrell's score in the 2007 season finale against Loyola, as well as Virginia's Heather Goehringer in a 1994 contest against James Madison. Simmons completed a personal hat trick in the first 6:20 of the contest as the Big Red built an insurmountable 7-0 lead less than 10 minutes in and cruised to the victory. Libby Johnson had a career night with five goals and three assists to lead the Big Red offense, while Simmons had three goals and two assists and Noelle Dowd had three goals and an assist. Johnson's five goals came on just six shots as Cornell out-shot the Bears 33-24 and won 17-of-28 draw controls.

FROSH ON TOP: Freshman Jessi Steinberg is the team's leading scorer through 10 games with 23 points on 13 goals and 10 assists. If she finishes as the team's top scorer, Steinberg would be the first freshman to land atop the list since Courtney Farrell had 40 points (28 goals, 12 assists) during the 2005 campaign.

STREAK OF THE WEEK: A season ago, Cornell was also on the wrong side of a long losing streak, dropping four consecutive games, all to ranked teams. How did the team respond? It went 6-2 down the stretch to finish tied for second in the Ancient Eight with its only losses to Syracuse and at Notre Dame. This season, the Big Red lost four consecutive games, all to ranked teams, and snapped it with a 5-3 victory over No. 19 New Hampshire.

SLOW YOUR GOALS: Cornell allowed No. 19 New Hampshire just three goals in picking up a 5-3 triumph over the Wildcats on Monday. It was the fewest scores by a Big Red opponent since limiting Hofstra to three goals in a 14-3 triumph on March 10, 2008. The five goals were the fewest scored in a Cornell victory since knocking off Yale 5-2 on April 11, 1992.

KEEPING THE BALL ROLLING: Cornell needs to win three of its final six to guarantee the Big Red its ninth winning record in 12 seasons under head coach Jenny Graap. Priot to her arrival, Cornell lacrosse had just 11 winning seasons in the first 26 years of the program.

WINNING IVY SEASON: Cornell needs to win its final three Ancient Eight contests to close out the campaign with a winning conference record. The Big Red has finished above .500 in league play seven times in the last nine years after never posting more than three conference victories prior to head coach Jenny Graap taking over in 1998.

REESE NAMED IVY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (MARCH 9): Reese was outstanding in the Big Red's 13-10 win at Hofstra, collecting a career-high 14 saves to stone a Pride offense averaging nearly 14 goals per outing. Reese made saves on Hofstra's first three shots to set the tone and made seven saves in each half to help the Big Red remain unbeaten.

LAFFERTY NAMED IVY LEAGUE DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (MARCH 2): Senior co-captain Deirdre Lafferty spearheaded a defense that surrendered a 6.47 goals against average in opening the season a perfect 2-0, earning her first Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week honors in the process. Lafferty posted seven caused turnovers and won four ground balls while helping Cornell clear the ball successfully 87 percent of the time in wins over defending Patriot League champion Colgate and unbeaten Rutgers (27-of-31).

McKIE EARNS SPOT ON HAUDENASAUNEE WORLD CUP TEAM: Freshman Mia McKie has earned a position on the Haudenasaunee Nation's team that will compete in the FIL Women's World Cup in Prague from June 17-27. McKie was a five-year varsity letter winner and three-year captain at Niagara-Wheatfield HS and earned the 2007 Tewaaraton Foundation Award for the Outstanding Native High School Player.

LAFFERTY, WIEGAND NAMED TEAM CAPTAINS: Seniors Deirdre Lafferty and Jessica Wiegand have been elected captains of the women's lacrosse team for the 2009 season. The duo will provide senior leadership to a young team that features 13 freshmen and 19 total underclassmen.

ANNUAL DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT HELPS FIGHT AGAINST MS: On December 7, 2008, the Cornell women's lacrosse team hosted the Fourth Annual Dodgeball Tournament to benefit Multiple Sclerosis. The event was held in Cornell's indoor turf facility, the Ramin Room, and was a fun stress-reliever during fall semester study days. The tournament was a great success again this year, with 41 teams participating, representing many of the varsity athletic programs.

IVY LEAGUE TO ADD POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT IN 2010: Ivy League Executive Director Jeff Orleans announced in January that the Ivy League will begin four-team tournaments in spring 2010 to determine the Ivy League's automatic qualifying institutions to the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Lacrosse Championships. The winners of the Ivy League championship will continue to be determined by results of the League's round-robin competitions. Each tournament will include the top four teams in Ivy League regular season round-robin competition and will be hosted by the round-robin winner. The men's tournament will be the season's last weekend (Friday-Sunday, May 7-9, 2010) and the women's tournament will be the preceding weekend (April 30-May 2).

NEXT UP: Cornell visits Syracuse (April 15 at 7 p.m.) and Yale (April 18 at 1 p.m.) before returning home for the final three games of the regular season, starting with Vanderbilt on April 21 at 2:30 p.m.
