BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The Cornell women's basketball team fell to Binghamton this evening, 74-42, at the Events Center. The Big Red closes out its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 6, when it welcomes Bucknell to Newman Arena at 7 p.m.
Cornell (5-7) was led by
Lauren Benson, who had an all-around solid game with 11 points, five rebounds and five assists with just one turnover from the point guard position. Freshman forward
Clare Fitzpatrick chipped in eight points and registered a team-high six rebounds.
Christine Vlasic also had five rebounds, including four offensive boards.
Binghamton (4-9) saw four players reach double-digits, including Viive Rebane and Jackie Ward with 16 points apiece. Orla O'Reilly and Erica Carter had 15 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bearcats held the 42-36 advantage on the boards and shot a blistering 47.4 percent from the floor and a solid 31.3 percent from 3-point range. Cornell shot an uncharacteristically poor 29.7 percent from the floor and just 10 percent from beyond the arc.
The Big Red jumped out to an early 6-4 lead at the 15:16 mark, thanks to layups from
Allie Munson, Claire Fitzpatrick and
Lauren Benson. The lead was short-lived, however, as Rebane tied the game on Binghamton's next possession.
Christine Vlasic returned the lead to Cornell, but 13 unanswered points by the Bearcats, including six from Orla O'Reilly and four from Rebane, gave the home team the 19-8 lead with 7:15 remaining in the half. A traditional three-point play by
Spencer Lane ended the Binghamton run, but the spark wasn't enough to rally Cornell as the Bearcats pushed its lead to 29-13 at the 3:31 mark. The Big Red outscored Binghamton down the stretch, but the home team took the commanding 32-17 lead into the intermission.
Five quick points at the start of the second half by Ward put the Bearcats up by 20 points, 37-17. Cornell cut the lead to 17 points on several occasions, but the hot-shooting Binghamton squad continued to answer every Big Red run with a basket of its own to keep the game out of reach.
