Women's Polo Sweeps Weekend, Including Win Over Virginia

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's polo team earned a weekend sweep, knocking off Virginia 18-12 on Friday night in Charlottesville, Va., then shut out Yale 34-0 on Saturday evening back in Ithaca to remain unbeaten on the season. The Big Red improved to 7-0 and has now outscored the opposition 175-41 in those seven games.

On Friday, Cornell traveled eight hours south to take on one of the top teams in the country at Virginia. Lizzie Wisner, Kailey Eldredge and Ali Hoffman got off to a slow start as the Cavaliers jumped to a 3-0 lead.The Big Red woke up and with a goal from each player in the lineup to tie the match after one chukker. In the second, the Cavaliers scored first before Wisner put the Big Red ahead for good with a two-pointer. Cornell would pull out to a six-goal lead at 10-4 before Virginia scored twice more to draw it back to 10-6 at the half. The Cavaliers were not about to go away and battled with Cornell throughout the third which ended in a draw as the teams headed into the fourth at 13-9. Cornell opened up the fourth with five consecutive goals, including a two-pointer by eldredge that extended the lead to 18-9 with just under two minutes left. The Big Red would cruise in to take the 18 12 victory. Wisner scored 10, Eldredge had six and Hoffman scored twice.

To complete the weekend sweep of the split squad, the Big Red played Yale on Saturday night at Oxley Equestrian Center. Britany Cox, Kate Harkness, and Kayleigh Sullivan started for Cornell, would put up nine goals in the first chukker and 17 in the first half while shutting out the Elis. Amanda Stern, Claire Glashan, and Alice Rowland came in for the second half and picked right up where their departed teammates left off.  That threesome matched both the defense and scoring of the first half and brought home the big win over the overmatched Bulldogs 34-0. Harkness led with nine goals, Rowland and Glashan each scored seven, Sullivan added three, with Cox and Stern each tallied two.
