ITHACA, N.Y. -- Senior
Nate David went 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs batted in as the Cornell baseball team opened the 2010 season with a doubleheader split against Binghamton on Tuesday afternoon at Hoy Field in Ithaca. Cornell dropped the opener, 5-3, before taking the second game by a 7-2 margin.
Kyle Groth,
Jadd Schmeltzer and
Mickey Brodsky each had a pair of hits on the day for Cornell, which banged out 13 hits in the two games. David, Groth and
Brian Billigen each drove in a pair of runs, with Brodsky scoring three times.
On the mound, Cornell pitchers allowed just three earned runs in 14 innings of work.
Corey Pappel got the start in game one and took the loss, allowing one earned run in five innings, scattering five hits while striking out five.
Matt Hill worked two innings of relief in the opener, surrendering four runs, but all of those were unearned. In game two,
Taylor Wood went five innings and allowed two runs, striking out three and allowing six hits to pick up the win.
Tony Bertucci and
David Rochefort worked a scoreless inning each to seal the victory.
In the opener, the Bearcats got on the board first in the fourth inning, with Peter Bregartner driving in Henry Dunn on a single to right. That score stood until the sixth when a throwing error on
Frank Hager led to a pair of unearned runs on a two-run double to right by Jeff Abrams. The Bearcats then added another pair of runs in the seventh with another error by Hager leading to a two-run single from Bregartner.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Cornell offense finally broke through, with
Marshall Yanzick singling home Groth. After
Brandon Lee lined into a fielder's choice, nailing Yanzick at second, Billigen tripled to the warning track in left center, scoring
Conor McCabe and Spencer Souza, who had come on to pinch run for Lee. A groundout by
Matt Langseth ended the rally, but the offense showed life for game two.
David got the Big Red going in game two, hitting a solo home run with two out in the second inning for the early lead. After Dunn knotted the score wit a solo home run of his own to lead off the fourth, Cornell responded by scoring three times in the fourth and sending nine men to the plate. Groth doubled in Brodsky, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hager. David was then hit by a pitch and scored on Schmeltzer's double to right, staking Cornell to a 3-1 lead.
Binghamton again cut into the lead in the next inning, scoring on a double to right center from C.J. Lukaszewski, but the Cornell offense responded with another three-run inning in the fifth. Brodsky, Groth and Hager each scored in the frame, with Groth and David both picking up one RBI.
Bertucci came on in relief for the sixth and allowed one hit in retiring the side, and Rochefort struck out a pair in the seventh as Cornell picked up its first victory of the year.
The Big Red returns to action on Sunday when it opens up its trip to Florida with a contest against Northwestern of the Big Ten at on Sunday at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Fla.
