ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak in a big way, twice rallying for the victory as the Big Red picked up a sweep over visiting LeMoyne on Wednesday afternoon at Hoy Field. The Big Red took the opener, 10-7, before winning the nightcap, 6-5, to improve to 8-14 on the year.
Marshall Yanzick,
Brenton Peters,
Frank Hager and
Nate David each had a pair of hits on the day for the Big Red, while
Mickey Brodsky scored four runs and
Conor McCabe drove in a team-best four runs on his first career home run, a grand slam in the fourth inning of game two.
On the mound,
Brian Billigen and
David Rochefort both pitched a pair of scoreless innings, with
Taylor Wood striking out a team-best three on the day in 4.1 innings of work. Rochefort and
Mike Carroll both picked up a win on the day, while Rochefort also added a save in game one.
In the opener, LeMoyne jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, as the first two Dolphin batters both homered over the wall in left. The third, Chris Edmondson, tripled to deep center off starter
Rick Marks, and it appeared as though a long day would be in store for the Big Red. Marks settled down, though, getting an RBI ground out, a strikeout and a ground out to short to escape the first inning.
The Big Red responded in the bottom half of the inning. Peters reached on a bunt single and moved to second when Brodsky was hit by a pitch. Hager singled to center to load the bases, and
Brandon Lee reached on a throwing error by LeMoyne second baseman Zach Wiley, scoring Peters and moving Brodsky to third.
Matt Langseth then hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Brodsky as Cornell trailed, 3-2, after one inning.
LeMoyne got another pair of runs in the third, as Brett Botsford reached on an infield single and moved to second when Langseth's throw to first was wide of the bag. A sacrifice bunt moved Botsford to third, and a single up the middle by Edmondson scored the Dolphin right fielder. A single to center by Matt Marra moved Edmondson to third, and he scored on a double to right by Sean Paino, staking LeMoyne to a 5-2 lead.
Again Cornell responded, this time with Brodsky leading off the bottom half of the inning with a double to the warning track in deep center. A balk moved him to third, and he scored when Lee singled to right, cutting the deficit to 5-3.
Yanzick singled to center to lead off the fourth, moving to second when Billigen was hit by a pitch. A sacrifice bunt by Peters moved both runners up, and Brodsky grounded out to short, scoring Yanzick and making the score 5-4.
LeMoyne scored another pair of runs in the sixth, as Paino led off the inning with a double down the line in left and moved to third on a flyout by catcher Brian Stinson. Ryan Mahoney singled to right, scoring Paino and moving Mahoney to second. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners when Botsford hit a fly to left that was dropped by Peters, scoring Mahoney, but Peters recovered to make a throw to the cutoff man, Hager, whose relay home was in plenty of time to nail Vince Redmond trying to score from first.
While the Dolphins took the 7-4 lead, the Big Red gained the momentum on the play at the plate, and it was Peters who got the rally started in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, he singled to center and then stole second, moving to third on a throwing error by Stinson. Brodsky walked, and Hager doubled to left, scoring Peters and moving Brodsky to third. Pinch-hitter
Anthony Irigoyen, in his first career at-bat, lined a single to center, scoring a pair and knotting the score at seven. A walk put two men on, and David lined a single to left that scored Irigoyen with the eventual game-winning run. Langseth and David then pulled off a double steal, and Langseth scored on a wild pitch to make the score 9-7.
Ryan Michael then singled to right, scoring David for the insurance run as Cornell sent 10 men to the plate in scoring six times in the inning.
Rochefort then came on and allowed just one walk, but got the three outs needed for his third save of the season.
Game two started out completely different, as neither team could get any offense going through three innings. In the fourth, Edmondson broke the deadlock with a towering home run to right-center, putting LeMoyne ahead, 1-0. Cornell got the run back in the bottom half of the inning, and then some. Brodsky was hit by a pitch and Hager walked, with both runners moving up on Langseth's single up the middle. With the bases loaded and two out, McCabe hit a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left for his first career grand slam.
With Cornell ahead 4-1, the Dolphins chipped away at the lead. A double to left center by Mahoney scored Joe Lombardi from second in the fifth, and the Dolphins got three more runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. The big blow in the sixth as Marra's three-run home run to left off of Irigoyen, as the Dolphins regained the lead.
Cornell couldn't get anything going in the bottom half of the sixth, and Rochefort came on in the seventh to retire the side, allowing only one hit on a single to center by Botsford. In the bottom half of the inning, Luke Nellis came on for the Dolphins, and promptly walked McCabe and hit
Jerry Vitiello, putting men on first and second with no outs.
Mike Lopez then laid down a perfect bunt, attempting to sacrifice but ending up getting a hit out of the play, loading the bases for Billigen. The sophomore then roped his only hit of the day, a double to the warning track in right center that scored a pair of runs and ended the contest, with Cornell on top, 6-5.
The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when it resumes Ivy League play with a doubleheader at Penn, opening up a four-game set against the Quakers in Philadelphia. First pitch of game one on Saturday is scheduled for 12 p.m.
