Dewey's Last-Second Goal Lifts Cornell Over Brown, 10-9

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Kate Dewey, who entered the game with one goal on the season, scored her second of the day with one second left on a free-position shot to give Cornell a 10-9 victory at Brown on Friday afternoon at Stevenson Field. Cornell improves to 4-7 (3-3 Ivy), while the Bears slipped to 7-5 (2-4 Ivy).

Dewey also won two draw controls in the win for Cornell, which keeps it in the race for the fourth and final spot in the inaugural Ivy League playoff. Sophomore Jessi Steinberg added four goals and Kyla Dambach had six saves in goal. Shannon McHugh scored two goals and won three draws in earning the victory.

Brown's Kaela McGilloway scored four times, including three straight late in the second half to help the Bears rally to tie the game after going down as many as three goals. Lindsay Minges scored twice and Paris Waterman added a game-high six draws and four ground balls to her two-goal effort.

Brown jumped out to a 3-1 lead nearly 20 minutes into the contest before three straight Big Red goals in a four-minute span gave the visitors its first lead of the game at 4-3. Johnson's second goal of the game at the 7:36 mark knotted the game before a free-position goal by Shannon McHugh two minutes later gave Cornell the lead.

Dambach played some of her best lacrosse in the first half, helping the Big Red overcome a 14-8 Brown shot advantage in the first 30 minutes with five big saves, including a stop on a free-position shot with under a minute to play that would have tied the score.

After Brown scored the equalizer a minute into the second half, Cornell ripped off three straight to take a 7-4 edge. McHugh again gave Cornell the lead, and Steinberg then complete her hat trick with a pair of goals in a span of 1:10 early in the half. The last of the two goals came after a pair of McHugh draws led to Big Red scores. The two squads traded goals over the final 19 minutes, with Steinberg's fourth goal and Kate Dewey's first extending the lead back to three each time the Bears answered. Brown fianlly clawed back to a one-goal deficit when McGilloway found the back of the net twice inside of a minute, the last making it 9-8 with 6:12 left.

McGilloway completed the comeback with a free-position score with 1:13 left to catch Cornell at 9-9. Steinberg won the ensuing draw control, but turned the ball over. THe Big Red got a big play on the ride, forcing a turnover in the backfield. Dewey's initial shot was saved, but the Big Red got a free-position attempt on a foul. The senior was able to capitalize with one second remaining on the clock to earn the dramatic victory and kee Cornell in the Ivy tournament race.

Cornell will face No. 8 Syracuse at Schoellkopf Field on Wednesday, April 21 at 7 p.m.
